Baton Rouge recycling - Scam or nah?

Recently I spoke with a dude who worked for the Baton Rouge recycling program. From that conversation, I have the impression that very little material is actually recycled, like less than 10% of what is collected. Apparently, there are all sorts of reasons they can dump the whole load. Anyone know where one could find out how much is actually recycled? It would be interesting to find out that the whole thing is a feel-good farce and completely fake.

I think this is correct. Not necessarily the 10% number, but a lot of what is collected to recycle is not ultimately recycled.

I don’t think that would bother most people on the OT. I remember in one thread some baws said they went out of their way to not recycle

It doesn’t surprise me. These companies use government to buy business. I suspect it’s all corrupt.

I worked in finance for a recycling company for five years. Most of the clean cardboard and clear plastics do get recycled, assuming China is open to buying it. Very little of the remaining items get recycled. Pretty much none of the glass is recycled.

It is a scam nationwide. We pay other countries to dump it in ocean.

I am a believer in recycling and conserving what we can so this is disappointing, but it’s also Baton Rouge so it’s totally believable. People in LA just don’t care about the environment at all and we are fine with trash all over the place.

I watched a doc on recycling and it said the majority of it makes it to a China landfill. Very small amount recycled here.

I don't think this is just a Baton Rouge or Louisiana thing, I think a lot of what is supposed to be recycled is ultimately trashed. Probably just more gets trashed down here than other places.

I fill my recycle can every other week
I don’t think to recycle canned good cans for some reason & don’t like putting glass in the bin but everything else I do

Most recycling facilities do not have the means to turn beer bottles into clean, filtered, reusable sand. Often times, it's to contaminated with paper and other other bits to be even be used for ground leveling purposes.

I’ve always had this suspicion. There is simply no fricking way the $12/hr laborers working at that place actually care enough about recycling.

IIRC, the company that has the recycling contract in EBR gets paid extra to continue to pick up glass just to keep it out of the landfill because there is apparently no market for it.
