I got so busy with work today that I forgot to come back to this thread so I’m late to the party but holy shite, how fricking incompetent can one police department be?

Until we learn that it's a training or maintenance issue, I will assume that there was no directive from the brass at BRPD headquarters to go crash.

What a massive failure. It’s completely unacceptable for the crash to be found out the following day.

WTF, BRPD

It did. It was complete torn apart from its wired and battery source.

What if they simply ran out of fuel? If they were trying to autorotate maybe they didn’t send a distress call.

A fully fueled R44 has 3 hours of endurance.

I doubt BRPD would keep aircraft on standby ready mode without a significant fuel load. But who knows…

Also R44 has low fuel caution light which illuminates with 3 gallons of fuel left which gives you about 10 minutes flight time at cruise power.

I think they are used to the aircraft just landing at random places and times. For them to not be seen in constant flight is normal. With no radio communication alerting anyone that they had a problem allowed the crash to go unnoticed until concerned people started looking around at their last know location.

Random landings doesn’t mean out of contact or informing others, but this is Baton Rouge…

Police helicopter based at airport taking off to help a pursuit in middle of night, crashes 12 minutes later, and not noticed missing for around 8 hours can’t approach any form of normal.

Was it only noticed when someone else requested its assistance?

Helicopters are probably the one thing I’m scared of and refuse to get on. No thank you.

Nothing makes any sense that it takes8-9 hours to figure out that a chopper went down.

article said they were assisting in a vehicle pursuit and turned around to go back

from the flight path it looks like something mechanical perhaps?

It also looks like the number eight, or the letter G. Please explain your logic.

Hard to say. That could have been spacial disorientation, or instructions from KBTR since they were close.

One of the articles said the search began when the families reported the officers never returned home from work.

The person at the dispatch center whose responsibility is to remain in communication with the chopper via radio and to track the movement via radar is a colossal frick up.

I personally will not get on an R22 or R44 due to their reputation. Founded or unfounded?

well he turned around cleanly, was on his course then made a sudden right turn, then a sweeping rght turn, then another sweeping right turn and straightened out then went down

I dont know but it seems the helicopter was pulling to the right? so was he trying to compensate for left yaw?

eta: I can see now he perhaps was adjusting course north back home and disorientation drove him into the ground

tragic whatever it is RIP

Based on the flight path map posted further up I think this is the spot where they were turning around:

LINK

For posters with aviation knowledge - is it possible based on the flight path map that they could've hit that tower in the dark? Or would an event like that not match up with the flight path map?

Agreed.

BRPD and the city as a whole is going to suffer significantly without those two in the air. They were responsible for an incalculable number of apprehensions. Really sad day.
