Baton Rouge parking meter saga is close to the end?

For a decade City administrations have been wrestling with the parking meter situation in downtown Baton Rouge. Mayor Holden worked on a plan, as early as 2012 per TV reports. He finally made progress in 2014.

New parking meters that allow people to pay for spots with debit or credit cards could be coming to downtown Baton Rouge at the end of the year with the possibility that parking rates could rise.
And the traffic engineers says;

Ingolf Partenheimer, chief traffic engineer for the city-parish, said the city is evaluating bids for the meters. Right now, a review is being done to see how many meters the city-parish will need. “We’re hoping to set up a meeting this week or early next week to finalize who we will choose for this project,” Partenheimer said.

City Director of Transportation and Drainage Fred Raiford said the city is hammering out the details for a plan to replace all of the downtown Baton Rouge meters. Raiford said he does not have a timeline yet for when those new meters will go in or how much it will cost the city. We will continue to update this developing story as more details become available.[/quote

Feb. 21, 2019 from WBRZ from Mayor Broome’s top official ,
The increased revenue would pay for private companies to enforce and maintain the meters and garages. Gissel said bids for the new parking technology will go out in about 30 days and could be operational later this year.
2/10/21 from WBRZ a vendor is chosen;

BATON ROUGE – New parking meters are close to becoming a reality in downtown, which means drivers could soon say goodbye to their coin bags. The city, introducing the item at Wednesday’s metro council meeting, is looking to hire the company ‘FlowBird’ to provide and install new smart parking meters. The current meters only accept coins as payment, but the new ones will accept credit cards as well as payment through an app. The upgrade has been in the works for years now.

Feb. 22, 2022 WBRZ reports,
BATON ROUGE - For quite a while now, replacing the downtown parking meters has been on the parish's to-do list. The project has gone out for bid three times and about a year ago the Metro Council approved the execution of a contract with Flowbird to provide parking equipment.
The problem, Covid and supply chain issues!

"Like the rest of the country, we're caught up in a supply chain issue," Chief Administrative Officer Darryl Gissel said. "We just can't get the equipment in right now."
July 27, 2022 from WBRZ,

BATON ROUGE - The City-Parish has finally signed a contract for a new street parking system in downtown Baton Rouge. The first shipment of parking kiosks have arrived and could be installed as soon as next month.

I work downtown and thankfully park in a garage, but I've seen way too many meters that just don't work (broken, don't take money, etc.). It's laughable.

Yeah, an insane number of meters are either broken or missing completely.
Not sure how they can even demand people pay parking tickets down there if they can’t or won’t fix or replace the meters.

The real question is who owns "Flowbird"?
NVM... it's majority owned by Searchlight Investment Group

French company spun off from Schlumberger, which was a petroleum services company when founded in the 20s.

Much like the city bus situations where you may have one or 2 riders and are spending more just to have the service.
How much does the city make in parking revenue by the time you add the costs for the meters, the collectors to pickup and count the change, and the enforcement aspect of meter maids, ticket officers, city court fees to collect fines, etc.
If you do not make enough to over your costs, you should abolish the meters all together. It is just going to be a money grab for someone to profit on new meters and swipe fees.

Thxs for the help, corrected.

I tried for months to pay a parking ticket on line and by phone. The system could not find my ticket.
Know who did find it? The city court. Now I have a bigger fine because this city can't get shite right. Don't even get me started on the circumstances of the ticket.

It has to be pretty lucrative, this deal had been years in the making.
Btw, had anyone seen a report in the bikeshare deal? How is that going?

GOAT. Loved white women and drinking and knew they make the world go round. Why he cleaned up downtown and got the bars packed.

Right. It's not like the parking spot disappears if the meter is broken. IMO if you get a spot with a broken meter, you should just get a freebie for parking that day. Seems like a reasonable thing until the city gets it fixed.

Kip and Rhorer had it going.

This is stupid. Glad I don't live near, nor have a need to go to downtown BR. Lafayette downtown takes cards and coins. Simple and less likely for failure.
Posted on 7/28/22 at 1:00 pm to Steadyhands
Stupid part is that a number of places in downtown BR, both private lots and public garages, have machines capable of handling cash and credit cards.
Park, note your spot number, pay either at kiosk or via app.

The best part was when I had to go to court one time, the max time you could buy on the meter was 2 hours, and me being the college student not familiar with the layout of downtown BR very well just said frick it and paid the 2 hours instead of driving around looking for a free spot in walking distance. And of course I was in court for more than that, and you can't just leave in the middle of it to go put more money in, so of course when you finally walk out you see that slip under your wiper. Nice setup to squeeze as much juice out of you as they can.
