The mayor is cleaning the place up for sure. You can’t go wrong with Mr. Clint’s candy and soda shop across the street from the bar.

108 murders in EBR as of today. The 15 year old that shot two people at that convenience store on Nicholson, one victim ended up dying from gunshot wounds a few days ago.
Someone was shot to death near McKinley, which boosted up the murder count.

Yes it is. BR is a complete shite-hole.

Yep, and we still have 1/3rd of the year to go. I've been to that gas station many times.

What’s insane is that this double shooting took place in the middle of the day at like 11 am. There’s a cop shop literally a mile away. These people simply don’t give a shite about being caught or who they may injure shooting sideways. When I was in BR, that was a big concern I had was simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Lived here most of my entire life, she peaked in the best ways despite some modern advancements between 1980 to 1990.
Sure, many Austinites, Las Vegans, etc..will say the same about density, population, traffic, dynamic growth,etc..in longing for days of old and a somewhat easier navigation of the masses..
But, in terms of safeness, cleanliness, raising kids, going to High School, College, Concerts, Cool Bar scenes,etc..
Only in the modernities and amenities that are equal to most all similar size cities, is she better today(Costco, Trader Joe, Whole Foods, Performing Arts Theatre, improved airport, etc..) And still have an inferior interstate system and service roads to say even Jackson-Ms.
You can count on one hand anything new or nice north of Fla Blvd from the River to Range Ave in the last forty years. All of which via Federal, State, or Bezos buys malls.
BR is in decline. And far lags the growth of many of it's former contemporaries over the last thirty-plus years. It's surrounding parishes seeing the growth and improvement. Same urban flight that has debased all of inner city America.
I'd dare say the same of NO if left to just locals, and not the subsidized nature of revolving door international tourism dinero.
Too many of La's brightest must flee to achieve their goals, and it's now at forty plus years of brain drain and economic flight.
Look how ratty, unkept, the dirty uncut medians and trashy boulevards, mildewed sound walls, rusty and graffitied overpasses of BR's two main and near only tourist hotel and dining corridors of College and Acadian. She can't even spiff up her most important few city blocks.

Like any city its size, BR has its good parts and its bad parts. Personally, I like BR and I think most people who continually bad mouth it are just miserable people.
At the same time, I don't think BR lives up to its potential. It really could be a lot better than it is.

Baton Rouge sucks arse based off the traffic alone.
frickin Monroe is better than Baton Rouge just because it doesn’t take you an hour to drive somewhere at 8 am or 5 pm.

Stopped at the Walmart yesterday for a resupply on my way back to BR. Is there a minimum weight to live there? Never seen so many cankles in my life.

Baton rouge outside of LSU and a few high end areas is a shite hole.
I see people say this all the time. It's just not true, in my opinion. There are shite areas in BR, no doubt. But I grew up in a real shithole, Opelousas. I think most people calling baton rouge a total shithole did not grow up in a real shithole.
BR has plenty of issues but it's really not that bad, all things considered.

Magnet system is really great if you can get in. We moved into a specific neighborhood to best improve our odds of magnet. WHAM is first choice, and we moved into the priority zone, but we're near FLAIM and some others, too.

I agree that there are still plenty of nice areas in SBR even if they've shrunk in the past 20 years.

I’ve been back since retiring in 2013 and don’t find it that bad. Are there better places, yes but there are a lot worse too. Any place is what you make it. You can choose to enjoy it as much as possible or be miserable and complain at the drop of a hat. Least that’s what I found in my 30+ years of serving in the Air Force.
If you find it that bad, why don’t you move instead of complaining at the drop of a hat?
