Depends on what the department will allow. Some only allow issues weapons and some allow personal carry to an extent.

I looked at list for a while back of a local agency about what could be carried and it was very minimal when it came to ar15. Just a couple brands and only a couple options for sights.

And the you have to qualify with that.

Said agency has since gone to 100% issued weapons and I know they wouldn't even allow some to qualify with a back up gun.

For the ones that can carry a personal AR, I would as well. Department issue gets a little more expensive as most contracts involve maintenance and repairs and that turns a $600 gun into a much more expensive one. The you have to have the trainers and ammo. Its becomes a big ordeal in the end.

I may be wrong, and hopefully things have changed for the better. This was 6 or 7 years ago when I looked at this stuff.

Almost all patrol officers everywhere have a pistol and shotgun. Most have some type of patrol rifle as well. Lots of military surplus M16's were issued years ago. I never liked carrying the 9mm or .40 subs like the Colt SMG or UMP

Unfortunately it gets in the way riding in the front seat with you so eventually they end up in the trunk

not sure this guy was dumb enough to communicate through text once he knew what he was going to do....

Unfortunately, much of his intel likely came through in person conversations and we may never know who pointed him in that direction

that's what I'm thinking, immediately thought of the guy the other night quoting that frick head Farrakhan in front of triple s.....even if it was just pointing him in that direction.
