Baseball...You make the call

This happened in a 13U game this weekend.
Man on first
One out
Batted ball hits field umpire (2 man crew) in between 1st and second - ball was hit sharply and was going to easily go through the gap
Note that the umpire was not behind the defense. He was in front of the base path.
Here's what the umpires did...
1-called for dead ball immediately after being hit
2-called runner at first base moving to second out
3-put batter at first
Agree or disagree? You make the call.

Ummm... What logic was that. I think the ball knocked a few screws loose.

No explanation was provided to the fans of course.
I was in disbelief that they came up with that solution.
It took them about 3 minutes to make up this new rule though so they had time to think it through.

happened in front of the 2nd baseball if you drew a line across the base path. Not live ball. They got that part right. That was the last time they were correct though.

Disagree, pretty sure it should be a live ball, play it out.

Will update the OP to include the fact that the umpire was not behind the defense.

I say live ball same as if ball hits rubber or bases or anything in field of play. Football u can catch a ball off the ref even use him as a bocker

Thats straight up retarded.
Thats the equivalent of a WR running down field, the umpire trips him, then just decides to give the offense 20 yards and a first down, but the down is 1st and 20 instead of first and 10

If we're talking MLB rules, and the ump is positioned in the infield then yeah...dead ball with batter taking first and runners advancing one base if forced to...but your league could have completely different rules

The ball is live, hitting blue is the same as the ball hitting the ground in fair territory
Pretty simple

Ump is part of the field, live ball

Can you see any scenario where the runner would be called out though? That makes no sense. It's either a live ball or a dead ball. There's no way you should come up with the runner being out.
Here's the rule interpretation based on MLB.
Umpire interference normally occurs when the second-base umpire is positioned on the infield side of second base and struck by a batted ball. When this happens the ball is dead and the batter is awarded first base. All other runners advance only if forced.

You play all balls live off the umpire in fair territory.
