I don't see anything unusual about positioning in this situation. With a runner on 1B, with a 2 man crew, the field umpire will be in the infield grass stationed between 1B and 2B. A ball hit between 1B and 2B might hit the umpire and it will have not passed any fielder EXCEPT the pitcher, as the ruling states.

Exactly as it happened. It was a really hard shot and while he tried to avoid the ball he really couldn't get out of the way.

No explanation was provided to the fans of course.

I was in disbelief that they came up with that solution.

How many arrest were made?

That's an odd question. The answer is zero. Why would there be police involvement?

Did they boo the umpire back to his truck after the game.

Damn, you LA folks must be really tough on umpires.

No booing. No cops. No fights. No cursing.

WTF goes on down there at youth baseball games.

Go with your 1%. Check a rules book.

That 1% killed you.

It's a dead ball for sure based on where the umpire is on the field. Batted balls are slightly different than thrown balls.

A batted ball that hit an umpire can indeed be called dead correctly. The rule, reasoning and explanation have been posted numerous times in the thread.

You aren't alone in your belief though.

In HS games this situation happens on a regular basis. That is the normal set up. The base umpire is usually behind the pitcher on the SS side of second base and in front of the dirt portion of the IF.

A play like the one initially described could easily occur. The OP did right bringing it here as a you make the call thingy. It could help some ump brush up on his rules because it is very likely to happen anytime.

With runner on 1B, the field umpire should be between 1B and 2B on the infield grass, not the 3B side.

I don't understand why the runner moving to 2nd was called out.

That makes no sense whatsoever.

I've seen them each way. When I go to a game tomorrow I'll see where the base ump lines up.

With a 2 man crew, runner only on 1B, field umpire should be between 1B and 2B. With a 3 man crew, runner only on 1B, the 1B umpire will be outside the fouling at 1B and the 3B umpire will be between 2B and 3B inside the grass of the infield. In a 2 man situation, with the runner only at 1B, the field umpire needs to be between 1B and 2B to make a call on a pick off. Any umpire who stations himself otherwise is out of position.
