If we're talking MLB rules, and the ump is positioned in the infield then yeah...dead ball with batter taking first and runners advancing one base if forced to...but your league could have completely different rule
This is the only correct answer

I've seen it happen in a high school game with a runner only on 3B. The batted ball hit the ump and the batter was awarded first base, but the runner at 3B had to remain and ended up not scoring the winning run.
The reason 3b stayed at 3rd in this situation was because he wasn't FORCED to another bag.

It's been said throughout this thread, but a batted ball that hits an umpire in the infield is a dead ball. Batter awarded 1st, runners advanced if they were forced.

Was the runner advancing to second in any way interfering with the ump getting out of the way? You can be called out for interference with a second baseman, so maybe they interpreted it to include interference with the blue??? Otherwise, dead ball is a good call from all I know, but don't get calling someone out.

1: Out
2: Out, if the catcher catches the foul tip.
2: Out, if the catcher catches the foul tip.

Participation trophies handed out, so who cares.

And for anyone that claiming that the ump is part of the field...
The umpire does not become part of the field until the ball has passed a fielder excluding the pitcher and catcher.
So if the ump gets hit in front of the fielder it is a dead ball, behind the fielder it is a live ball.
The screw up is calling the baserunner out. They got this part of the rule mixed up with interference by a baserunner.

Runner had no contact or effect on the umpire.

Since everyone is anti-participation trophy, shouldn't they be ready to fight if a bad call was made that could change the outcome of the game?
Damn, people, make up your minds.

1-called for dead ball immediately after being hit
2-called runner at first base moving to second out
3-put batter at first
Part 2 was incorrect.
Ball is dead immediately. All runners who would be forced advance one base. Batter is safe on first. Next batter. Let's play.

live ball in your situation...or dead upon hitting the ump. no runnners should advance imho if it was ruled dead. We had something similar in 12U this weekend....except the ump CAUGHT the cut off ball coming from the centerfielder and then dropped it at his feet. Some how, they gave two runs to the other team...we were on defense...if the ump didn't interfere...as in didn't CATCH the ball, it is live...as he is a part of the field...it should have been called dead and everybody should have frozen....but my ump CAUGHT the damn cutoff throw from the outfield...and then gave two runs to the offensive team...we tied them but were fixing to win the game...it was the final inning...ended up gettign eliminated later in the day by the team that won the whole tourney though so we had a good day...

It's a dead ball. How do you make the batter go back to the plate when he put the ball in fair territory? That doesn't make sense at all either.
In your scenario, the call was correct. The umpire is part of the field on a thrown ball. Now, he obviously shouldn't have caught the ball but I don't know of a rule that covers intentional umpire interference so it's still a live ball.
What in the world was he thinking? Did he explain his actions at all.

This thread proves how many people THINK they know the rules of baseball. I see this everyday. People swear by rules that they've heard explained to them and most of them have never read thru a rule book.

I'm a little surprised so many thought it was a live ball still.

said he thought it was gonna hit his face...i get defending yourself but it should have been dead as soon as he grabbed it...they gave the run to the kid rounding third though which was my beef...that cut throw could have prevented that run...the other coach was losing his mind about it so we kind of let it be...it was our first pool game of the day so...
Posted on 3/14/16 at 8:21 am to roadGator
it seems correct in your scenario that the runners should have advanced but that should have been it...no outs.
Posted on 3/14/16 at 8:29 am to roadGator
If it was a dead ball how could the runner from 1st to 2nd be ruled out ?
Posted on 3/14/16 at 8:38 am to roadGator
You don't have to have contact. I've been called out running from first to second and "cutting off" the second baseman from getting to the ball. Not saying that's what happened, as it sounds like it wasn't..... Just saying.
