Not always. Only if he's behind the infield.

Will update the OP to include the fact that the umpire was not behind the defense.

In that case, dead ball and the batter gets first base, runner advances to second.

If he was behind the fielder it would be live.

Correct.

I had to laugh at the ruling that the runner was out as if he had anything to do with the play.

It is a live ball. When I was playing I hit a line drive at the 2nd base ump who "froze" and it was played as a live ball the same as if it had hit back up the box and tagged the pitcher. I was safe at first and the runner on 2nd made it to 3rd base and it was next mana up.

If the ump was behind the fielder when your line drive hit him it was a live ball. Nice hit by the way.

Umpire interference normally occurs when the second-base umpire is positioned on the infield side of second base and struck by a batted ball. When this happens the ball is dead and the batter is awarded first base. All other runners advance only if forced

It had nothing to do with my son. Pretty silly assumption and he has a zero percent shot at the majors. That's a really silly statement.

Didn't read. It's 13U baseball so no matter what the correct answer is who gives a shite.

Just bring your kid to hooters and he won't care about it. But make sure you order enough food.

There's nothing to agree or disagree with. There's a rule for this situation and in this case the umps made the correct call.

You are saying dead ball, runner on first out and batter safe?

Seems pretty stupid that if the umpire gets hit with a ball to batting team automatically gets an out.

It's not the correct call. Your intuition is correct.

Unless I'm missing something in the rule book...which is possible I guess.

True, not zero but Considering less than 1% of people playing high school baseball get drafted (much less making it to the majors) it's not that really much of a far fetched statement. Anyway, it was meant as a joke. He's 13. I am sure he has won many participation trophies in his life.

It is NOT a live ball. It's a dead ball and runner goes to 2nd. Batter is awarded first.

This thread is about umpires, not any of the players. I'm not sure why you continue to make it about the players but whatever floats your boat.

Why?

Hitting the ump with a ball makes it a dead ball in every league I've ever played in. Any runners advance one base and the batter goes to 1st.

I'll say this again, you're basing this off of MLB rules...what's your league rules say?
