LINK

Experienced BASE jumper, Karl experienced a malfunction when his canopy had tension knots on the right rear lines halfway up the lines. He was fighting to keep the canopy flying straight and trying to clear the knots. In the end, he was airlifted off the mountain with a broken tibia plateau on his right leg and minor cuts and scrapes on his hands.

You couldn’t pay me money to jump off a cliff.

Back in my adrenaline junkie days, I did a handful of BASE jumps mainly because doing Bridge Day in the New River Gorge found its way onto my bucket list. The obvious issue is the limited time to clear any malfunctions. Tension knots are usually a result of not meticulously untwisting your steering/brake lines every day but can happen anyway and are a bitch to clear. As I got older I began to prefer the relative safety of opening well over 1,000 feet from the ground.

Then there'd still be a pussy at the top too.

Experienced my arse. Dumbass could easily guide his chute using the riser straps and didn't need to frantically try to untangle those lines. He thought you could only steer the chute using the toggles. Not experienced.

He should have cut that chute away and used his backup

That chute was serviceable. See my post above.

He had forward movement and a decent fall rate. He could have guided away from the cliff before he attempted to untangle. Him panicking caused his injury.
