Hong Kong high rise fire

Why haven’t these burning high rise buildings collapsed in a demolition free fall yet?

They're still burning. They probably will collapse at some point.

Thousands of people affected: Wang Fuk Court, a public housing estate consisting of eight high-rise towers and nearly 2,000 apartments, is home to more than 4,000 people. Many of the residents are pensioners, with roughly 36% of residents 65 or older, according to government-sourced data.

Not from the fire but from a subsequent controlled demolition after the fires are extinguished.

When we visited Hong Cong forty years ago, we were impressed by the scaffolding that clad the buildings being built. It was impressive and the green color indicated that the bamboo wasn't that old.

That's a lot of years to not have had this happen.

Thank you for all the pictures. And for the story.

eta The ABC link in the OP has an updated fatality list: still less than 30 confirmed dead, but 279 reported missing. (noonish Friday EST)

Out of respect for the tragic victims, I will refrain from any lame humorous comment.

So I'm guessing these buildings did NOT have sprinkler systems? Or the ones that were in there were Chinese made?

ETA: must've started on a low floor.

Bamboo Scaffolding

Except for the serious circumstances, would be a great band name.

One of the top cities in the world and bamboo scaffolding is still in use.

Its cheap strong and abundant. They've been using it for a century without major issues. Bamboo scaffolding was Everywhere when I was there back in the 80’s, and they were a packed, tall building metropolis then too. They've got more skyscrapers squeezed tight then just about anyone. Thats as much a problem as the bamboo.

fireby SuperSaintOnly 13 dead? Pretty impressive

There’s going to be way more dead and they will lie and tell you about a third of the actual deaths.

This is how they operate. They don’t want to embarrass themselves anymore than they already have today.

They live more densely than we can even fathom.

Hong Kong is home of the coffin apartment...wouldn't be shocked if hundreds and close to 1000 died in that
