So the employees drove to work that morning, drank then drove home that evening?

Must be, because it sounds like you've got a sweet gig already.

I've had an incredible career here, 36 years, Captain for 32 of those, have always had the pick of whatever there was to choose from, airplane, vacation, schedule, you name it, a friend who is an engineer on the Lightning II asked me to come over to their training department, live abroad, back in fighter community, pretty sweet gig

How big is the company? Small company with only a few employees then I wouldn't bail. Bigger company where your absence won't be noticed as much, then just make up something related to kids (basketball game, no babysitter, tickets to some concert or event that's in town tonight).

36 years is a good run, and that does sound like an interesting job. Any flying involved?

not as part of the job description but as my friend said, "how can we expect you to teach guys how to fly this thing if you've never laid hands on it?"

not holding my breath but the opportunity could be there for something like an FCF or data collection, who knows?

ETA: two seater of course

I never go.

Just tell them I'm going hunting and will be at my camp.
Which is not a lie.

That would sweeten the pot. All I can think about right now is getting away from the military and kicking off my airline career, but I can see how you might be ready to do something different after 36 years.

this offer just came out of the blue(no pun,) I still really enjoy what I do and was going to ride it out to the end, but I would have never imagined having this opportunity at this stage of the game, money is no longer a factor, I just have to let them know something before they start the wheels turning on a security clearance

Going through that process again alone would be a deal breaker for me

Tell them you have explosive diarrhea. Nobody asks questions after that bit of information.
