Tayler Braud, 32, is accused of defrauding a woman out of more than $5,500 worth of work and materials, authorities say.

Officials say the victim had to pay a second contractor more than $4,400 to repair and complete Braud’s work, bringing her total financial loss to nearly $10,000.

That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.

After the flood waters entered her home in May, she had to look for a contractor to repair all the damage. So she posted something on NextDoor.

“So, I was like are you a contractor do you do flood mediation repairs. (He said) Yeah. Okay, so he came over and he did an estimate for me,” said Pippen.

Pippen said everything looked good on paper when it came to Braud. So she asked for everything in writing.

“That matched up. Okay great. So you give half up front, which is pretty normal for this size job it is, and so we did. We gave him 12,492 dollars,” said Pippen.

“Up front?” questioned WAFB’s Lester Duhe’.

“Up front. That was half the job,” said Pippen.

After searching for a contractor on Facebook Marketplace, Hatfield hired Tompkins earlier this year.

"I hired Daniel Scott Tompkins of Tompkins All Purpose Construction in April to build a pool house [and] outdoor kitchen for me," Hatfield said.

Originally, Hatfield paid Tompkins deposits totaling $28,000. After several weeks of waiting, he says some incorrect materials were delivered.

In total, Hatfield shelled out roughly $48,000 of the $92,000 quote.

A $92,000 pool house?

tailgate residential handymen, not “contractors”. People should know better by now, but evidently they don’t

as always, cheapest is never best or even good

Partially - they have an obligation to get a story right.

The owner has a completed project for which he overpaid for it.

The contractor, Braud, failed and this raises red flags for anyone who may want to work with him, but he didn't "scam" the owner out of nearly $10k.

That other dude though, that's as bad as it gets.

And Braud might have other issues that make it worse, but it's bad, based on just this story, to lump him in this same category.

I'll expand on this (not defending Braud, defending the process and outting the story as INCOMPLETE and probably INACURRATE):

Homeowner paid Braud $5500

What was the total job?

How much did Braud complete?

Second contractors are ALWAYS more expensive fixing someone else's problems. It was "fixed" and completed for an additional $4400.

Was it a $5500 job completed for $9900? $4400 'scam'.

Was it an $8000 job completed for $9900? $1900 'scam'.

Either way no where close to $10k.

Was it a $6000 job that when the owner had a better idea of what he wanted and knew he had a "blank check" because he was going back on the original contractor for damages and expanded the scope or upgraded the materials?

Who's scamming who?

I think I played soccer against Braud growing up. He was a jerk back then, too.

Do you HAVE to look like a functioning retard to be a scamming contractor in BTR?

When we updated our bathrooms earlier this year Taylor reached out to me on NextDoor. I asked NextDoor if anyone else used him and there really wasn't any recommendations. At the time he was still operating under Braud Electric so being in construction myself, I was suspicious that an electrical contractor was presenting himself as a general contractor. After seeing some photos from others in the neighborhood that got scammed and had shoddy work by him, man did I dodge a bullet haha

I don’t pay for work until it’s completed. I will make progress payments for work that is done, but that’s it.
In my opinion you don’t have a contracting business if you have to get paid before you start work.

Yeah.

The old axiom always holds true: you get what you pay for. It’s immutable.

Especially right now. My uncle has his own business doing this kind of work...home renovations, new additions, plus general home repair. He's booked solid until late February and doesn't advertise or solicit AT ALL. The good ones (contractors) can and do easily survive off of word-of-mouth recommendations.

I mean she had to pay another contractor because she was scammed so it cost her almost $10k, but I get what you are saying. She did pay $4,400 and received $4,400 worth of work.. The best way to word it, I guess, would be to say "She ended up paying almost $10k for almost $5k worth of work".
