When we lived in the Quarter, we knew a lot of the police. One who was new to the city was 'underground' for Mardi Gras, disguised as having come off of one of the Navy ships in port.
He said they made a lot of arrests the first night. The second night, nada. Because? because the seedy underground of the city has its own info pipeline and their pictures were out as 'cops'.
This level of security is so different. There may be undercover dudes, but overwhelming numbers of police etc. do have a preventive use.

On Monday I went to Bunkie from Baton Rouge. The span from Baton Rouge to Krotz Springs I counted 20+ troopers heading the opposite direction
