I remember part of that story being that the f14 was prone to engine stall on a ballistic takeoff and pilots were instructed not to do that.

Yeah. Burning jet fuel. It is a high performance take off, serves no purpose other than its fun to do. Might have been an Airman or NCO of the quarter ride. That is what they did on mine at take off just to frick with me.

Those climbs are common for the test pilots after repairs ....but, I doubt they’d perform mechanical checks in formation.
