Since Federal Income tax is consistent sans deductions you can conclude that Texas has a higher median salary than La., etc. this comparison is useless.

Need to remove federal taxes since it's not a state tax burden. Makes it a bit misleading

I initially was going to leave out fed, but decided to make the OT's deep thinkers do a little math to come up with just sales and prop tax

Tennessee lower than all those in op!

Tennessee: $11,687.37 in Total Taxes Paid
Federal income taxes paid: $6,420.30
State income taxes paid: $0.00
Gas taxes paid: $293.89
Sales taxes paid: $3,763.66
Property taxes paid: $1,210.00

How does Tennessee fund public schools? We have family there and the schools seem good - but no income tax and low property taxes makes me wonder how...

Because people make more taxable income in Texas. This is showing the total average tax burden.

While showing the tax burden at a set income is probably better for comparison, this really isn't that hard to figure out.

Gotcha, but all he's saying is that people that make more money pay more taxes.

Property tax numbers are probably scued. Metros have disproportionately higher than the rural parts of the state. In Appalachia a lot of these people still live in shanties

Second, they should show it at different income levels...ie $50k, 150k, 500k. That would be an apples to apples comparison.

The list is for average taxes paid by state. That kinda takes average income as a variable.

Dumb way to rank? Sure,. It that's the list.

Those numbers are useless without adjusting for income. A richer state is going to pay more than a poorer state, even with the same rates.

This! The information is useless. Should have done it giving the same salary across the board adjusted for COL

Well I guess my reasoning is that federal taxes aren't State specific, where the others are.

No its not. If you do a little research and know the sales tax rates and property tax rates you can deduce consumer and home values of states related to federal taxable income. I find this information very useful and informative.

To judge tax burdens you have to look st everything.

State taxes matter, but so do local taxes and fees.

EBR has a much higher tax and fee burden than say Livingston.

Just comparing state with another state doesn't tell the entire story.

Yeah, but Texas also has no state income tax, comparable sales tax and lottery, and our property taxes are about 3X from what I've seen.

Example (assume homestead exemption for both): Non Ag $450K property in Williamson County, TN: property tax $3,500 or so - same $450K valuation anywhere in Texas: property tax at least $9,000

That's would be what someone would pay on an appraised value of $185,000 in Austin.

Those are called property and sales taxes. They're directly referenced in the OP

My wife and I paid Philadelphia City income tax of $8100 combined... That's just city income tax. Add another $5300 in property taxes. Not sure what We get for that price.

It’s a shitty article. It’s based on median income per state. A more accurate comparison would be to take a median income for the country and test the tax bite in each state and then normalize for cost of living.

This article nor any other article you could dig up will convince any reasonable person that LA is a better place to live than TX. Not sorry.
