Frankly, I miss the early '00s. Sure it was a shitty cultural moment for music and movies and fashion and shite. But I checked email maybe once every couple of days, I had a flip phone that few people called (which was a good thing), and -- perhaps most importantly -- I had a few places I could go and my friends would just be there hanging out. You know -- like in person.
This is the last time I remember not feeling stressed out by social media and mobile phones and email. It is the last time I remember having a real community of friends who congregated in physical space. That's what we're missing -- human contact and community; a sense of belonging
Part of it is technology. Part of it is geographic mobility and the knowledge economy. Part of it is the "always on" work culture. Add all that up and a lot of people end of feeling isolated and alone, without their close friends and family nearby, and social media and text as the only way to communicate. No bueno.

I work in IT but have made it understood that I don't check email after hours. If you need me call or text me. Otherwise, I'll get back to you when I get in the office tomorrow. Work life balance is a thing for some.

Sure, there are individual differences in terms of being able to put up barriers and defend your leisure time. And yes, I am personally one of those who succumbs to the time crunch far too easily.
But the general social trend is toward more work for less payoff. We have less and less leisure time -- and by that I mean time when you can shut off your work brain. Other societies are better at this than we are -- so it isn't JUST about technology. It is also about culture and expectations.

Eh, It's more personal than structural or cultural. Some people just can't shut it down

Sort of depends on the industry too I guess. My wife works in insurance. She walks out of the door and never has anything to do with her job until she walks in the next day. She doesn't even have work email on her phone.
My industry is 24/7/365 unfortunately although I'm obviously not expected to be available all of the time.

And then you have my wife who's basically in between. She can leave a good bit at work, but doesn't. She's a perfect example of what Roger means.

I think most pressure isself generated by people comparing to their professional peer group. I know people like this, they'll do everything they can to stay ahead. I've done this myself.
