Come back and talk to us when you have replaced the air filters on a 2016-up 3.0 twin turbo Infiniti Q50. You will be singing a different tune and probably paying somebody who knows what they are doing to figure out why your car now has a check engine light on and runs like shite.

No one gives a frick that you drive an Infiniti

I don't. I work on them for a living and have for 37+ years and have to go behind dumbass know-it-alls like you fixing their frickups on a daily basis.

I drive a 2007 Hyundai SantaFe because it's paid for, reliable, insurance is cheap, and it isn't loaded with worthless gimmicks that cause problems and cost an arm and a leg to repair.

OK. Whatever your career is, you are a fricking dishonest crook.
I have no idea who you are or what you do, but you are dishonest because of what you do for a living.

Does that give you a bit of an idea why?

I made a joke about how long it takes to take the air filter out of its box and you're asking me about my career and calling me a crook?

Pretty simple. Stop taking it to anyone. Maintain it all yourself. ALL of it.

I know I was just lazy. It’s a new car and you have to remove the glove box to access it…lesson learned.

Here is the thing. You definitely have chains that push everything with their multi point inspections and promote a sense of fear to not make the fix right then.

Other business do it right , and explain the true pro’s and con’s.

If any place isn’t at minimum going over any potential needs when you come in for service they aren’t doing your job.

If your vehicle is close to needing a filter service treatment etc don’t put it off stick with the OE Rec it’s proven. Vehicle life and efficiency are better.

All that said if they can’t show you a air filter before changing it you want to go somewhere else!

As a former auto tech. Air filters, wipers, cabin filters, tire rotations/balances, alignment, brake fluid exchanges are the most profitable and easier upsells to customers. Techs are mainly paid a flat rate so they have incentive to upsell. No work no money.

Went to Lexus a couple of years ago for an oil change.

They wanted to replace my cabin air filter for around 200 bucks.

Something I can do in 2 minutes with a $20 part.

Go to a decent mechanic. I've had 2 and visited multiple times over the decades and never had them ask to replace an air filter. Oil change shops are not mechanics in most instances.

You mean said blue collar expert that actively scams in situations like this? I was having recall work done at the Toyota dealership when they tried the air filter scam on an old lady who was sitting next to me. The tech brought the filter in and it wasn't dirty..told her she didn't need it

That's why you find one that isn't and you stick with them.

The place I was referred to 20 years ago is further away than a bunch of other shops, but they are honest. Family owned / run. And they can work on anything from my 7.3 Cummins to the teen's Accord or RAV4. They'd never suggest an air filter change as they know I do most of my own maintenance.

Good shops don't need to be dishonest. They have enough repeat, referred customers they stay overwhelmed with work.

Changing the air filter more frequently than recommended is the single cheapest way to extend the life of your engine. The cleaner the air the cleaner your combustion. Restricted air flow or a filter releasing particles into the cylinders decreases the fuel efficiency.

If you have ever explained how a Mercedes Benz is built and why it requires certain maintenance to an arrogant owner then you understand why people don’t always put forth the effort to explain why a new air filter is necessary for a new car to maintain value.
