This is so tragic. I have a young son and truly empathize with Mr. Gruver's parents.
They are grieving, searching for information, and hoping others will learn from this. They are likely reading the remarks in this thread. My prayers are with them tonight.

I understand due to the unfortunate death but I'm not sure why you would ever be proud to be one?

If they are they need to stop. Everyone realizes the gravity of this event- regardless of their comments. But the next of kin and close personal friends who may be on this site need to realize many here didn't know the deceased and won't treat his passing as reverently as they will.
Basically, this isn't the place for an emotionally vulnerable lurker right now.
Hell, this isn't a site for anyone who is emotionally vulnerable at any time.

You're entitled to your opinion, Perm. I will not engage your comment. I will leave it at that.

20 arrested and 1 charged with murder, I heard.
What's the mandatory sentence for manslaughter in Louisiana? Or negligent homicide?

We were in the woods and were given one last chance to relinquish everything in our pockets. I thought about hanging on to my cellphone but decided to hand it over. Glad I did because they ran us into a pond while blindfolded
do you know where you were? was this 2005?

I was blindfolded, put into a car and driven a pretty good distance. I was kicked out the car on a dirt road next to a cane field at 3 AM, with only the clothes on my back, no wallet, no money, and in those days cell phones didn't exist.
shite like this is why people aren't really going to give a shite if they actually kill off greek life from campus.
The rest of the story.
I was on a dirt road next to a cane field, and had no idea where I was. It was a pitch black night, no moon. I saw some lights in the distance, so I walked toward those lights. The lights were on a barn next to a house that was in complete darkness. No way I'm knocking at that door to get shot by startled farmer. The house was on a paved road, so I started walking down the road. I perceived that off on the horizon, there seemed to be part of the sky that looked bright like it may be lit up by some civilization. I walked roads making my way toward that area. After awhile I hit River Road and walked toward the dim lights I could see. There were houses in darkness spaced along River Road, but knew better than to go knock on one of those doors. I came across a run down looking convenience store and decided to stop and wait there until it opened. Shortly after sun up an elderly black gentleman pulled up and unlocked the store. I explained to him the situation I was in and asked him where the hell as I. He told me I was j just outside White Castle. He let me u se the phone to call my roommate to come get me. He asked if I was hungry and I said yeah, the last time I ate was lunch the day before. He went to a kitchen in the back and fixed us a big breakfast.
So it was really not that bad of an experience. In fact, a few months ago, I ran into one of the actives that drove me out there, and yep, he asked me "been to White Castle lately?"

I agree 100%, but am just pointing out what any parent would do.

I think just like making drinking taboo, making hazing extremely taboo really intensifies the hazing when it happens. When it's done in limited instances, the intensity goes through the roof because they're trying to make up for lost time and opportunity.

100 percent true. Drinking has gone underground and become much more dangerous. When I was a pledge we had beer trucks in the front lawn on bid night. By the time Been Wynn died LSU had cracked down so hard on the frats that hard liquor became the norm and things went underground. People do not drink themselves to death on beer. It is a very sad situation but treating 18 year olds as illegal villains has contributed to dangerous binge drinking on hard alcohol.

wrong era my friend, you would not have wanted any part of the bad arse element of my frat, today's rules are different I suppose, but the little cast punch video that resulted in charges would look like a sorostitute rush night compared to the shite that went down back in the day

prayers for the kid's family.....we don't know the pain they are dealing with
when did greeks start pounding alcohol like this? when I was an undergrad there was drinking but we never go close to a situation where someone was close to drinking to death.

Dont know where or when you went to school, but I know of at least 10 guys who were in my fraternity who were legit tough as hell. Not gangsta, thug, weapon pulling badass. But good old corn fed, country arse whipping bad. Did they win every fight? I don't know. Were they ten feet tall and bullet proof? Hell no. But they wouldn't back down and they wouldn't hesitate to knock the shite out of someone going toe-to-toe. No cheap shots, just strait up brawling.
We weren't all like that, but to stereotype all frat stars as bitches is beyond silly. We had some bitches in the ranks, but we also had some serious arse kickers.
