Zero deaths are acceptable. Who is accepting them? Hopefully the people responsible are charged and the fraternities are removed from campus.

Are you saying the entire Greek system should end? More people get killed every year by champagne corks.

Being in a fraternity at LSU was one of the most impactful events of my life. I met the best people and the worst people I have ever known. I still talk to two by phone almost every single day. The worst were truly garbage.

As for them being rich kids-please. LSU is a state school. We had two or three but it was solidly middle class. Parents were teachers and nurses and plant workers etc. Just normal Louisiana kids.

I fratted hard. I was an officer of a 150 member fraternity. I never witnessed real hazing or forced drinking. I did drink too much. In my final year my fraternity fractured and I made a lot of enemies. It was very difficult. I left Baton Rouge as soon as I could and I was done with all that frat shite. It was all along, in fundamental conflict with who I wanted to be as a man. I never really belonged there, even though I thrived there on the surface.

I would never want my son to join a fraternity. I don't want him to make his world smaller or more exclusive, I would want him to make his life larger and more inclusive. That's his nature anyway. I think they have largely outlived their usefuleness as college culture is hostile to them otherwise and membership alone puts a target on their back. If you want your son to learn the old school male code, have him join the Marine Corps or get into extreme sports. Male bonding is awesome, but it's just too risky in this hyper-sensitive culture.

I agree. I know every generation and chapter is different, but I never saw one instance of "over the top" hazing. It was all clean fun, and in way, actually productive. It was typically like assigning your kid chores.

How are they going to "enforce" this indefinite suspension at football games

Couldn't the Greeks just "meet up" at a non sanctioned tailgate? I don't have anyone of the rules and stuff for their tailgates at the parade grounds.

At some point, one needs to ask if the entire premise of the Greek system needs to be eradicated. Times have changed.

It means everything is suspended. No socials, no tailgates, no bus trips, no House parties, and no pledging.

I don't know what's going to happen. With all the current pledges though.

One could ask it but the answer would be no.

They can't completely enforce it, but they will where they can. Expect to see a lot more cops and undercover cops around the parade grounds, indian mounds and student union. They will also most likely have cops patrolling fraternity and sorority row looking for parties.

I think they mean social events. They can't close the frats down because thousands of kids live in them.

What premise?

At their heart, a Fraternity is just a co-op. It is nothing more than a group of people sharing resources to have a place to live, eat and socialize. That is it. The vast majority, like 99 percent or more, do not participate in this silly hazing.

Are you under them impression that non-greeks don't drink, do drugs, die, etc?

Seems like these Greeks are a small but troublesome minority. If they're responsible for all these problems, why keep them around?

They need to go back to when they recruited guys who were leaders, not just lushes. Given the number of ODs in the last three or so years, I'd also hair follicle test every member. I know young guys think drugs are just a normal part of life, but they aren't. It's not until you get a bit older do you realize how whacked out druggies become and how badly so many process decisions.

The average fraternity has more than 100 members. If you picked 100 random LSU males and tracked their behavior for a year, do you think that random 100 people would get in more or less trouble than 100 random fraternity members?

I would say it would be about equal.

Hazing is horrible and these people should be punished, but this is not about the system.

How about we never un-suspend them? Permanently seems fine.
