I hope so too. I really only like visiting big cities. Ideally I'd like to live in a mountain town

This is ultimately the core problem I had. I could have lived in Va Highlands or 5 points etc but that would put me at minimum 3 more hours of driving every day to get to and from work in Dunwoody. Add in the time driving to places I want to go and it literally does translate to 20+ hours in a car every week.

I get that working a corporate job downtown, you could live a pretty good life living midtown, buckhead, va highlands etc. That just wasnt in the cards for me. I could afford a 1200-1500 apartment but it wouldn’t have been financially wise.

I probably was a little unfair to Atlanta as my work situation contributed to my shitty experience here.

Oh I do too. But masses of humanity aren't conducive to a peaceful existence imo and I could never live in one. I gave up the rat race long ago

I'm not one to downplay the traffic here, but this is exaggeration.

It is 7pm here right now (still rush hour), and it is a 26-30 minute drive from Dunwoody to V.H. on Waze and Google Maps.

I think so too.

I go about 16 miles over 75 and 285 and my commute is probably 30-35 on average and an hour during near-catastrophe conditions (that ignores the 6 hour commute during snowmageddon, of course).

The only true 3 hour roundtrip commute is like Newnan-Buckhead or something similar (named worst commute in America at one point), and even that probably averages closer to 2 hours most of the time.

I lived in NYC for a year in my mid 20s. That sounds like the hell to me now at 40

I lived in Alpharetta, I liked it. Could normally make it to a ball game in 20-30 mins. The airport was a plus, pre-check is a necessity. Lots of IT jobs attract many Indians there....agree about the cleanliness of restaurants and markets they take over. Lots of $$ and beautiful women in Johns Creek. I would live there again.

so you started this thread in november asking for recommendations, and now you're here bitching about the choice you made...you were given plenty of options and a great deal of pros and cons of what you were asking for (<30 minute commute to work, and <$1k rent and plenty of nightlife geared toward your age group ), and now you've come to the conclusion that the problem is that the entire atlanta metro area sucks...not that you had unreal expectations, and made poor choices...

When I was in my mid 20s I badly wanted to go there or to Boston. I'm nothing like that anymore

Life is a gauntlet and the struggle for self actualization takes many roads, leads to many changes. I think there are places where people thrive emotionally and spiritually, mentally but most never find it in the fight for the almighty dollar, or for the faster pace. Most settle. My place in life has changed dramattically over 30 years, I'm thankful I was able to adapt and find it

My daughter has 5-6 years of school left. I'm headed for some terrain and cooler weather afterwards. I despise the hot, humid weather in South LA.

I can understand that. I've not regretted it one bit. I still have nightmares that I'm stuck down there and can't get home. There's nothing thing a cool sea breeze with a mountain vista can't fix.

I can't think of any big cities I've been to that don't have some very "charming" areas...
Maybe Houston

I agree with you about small towns in New England and the Midwest though. It's too bad they can't exist in the south.

That thread is ultimately what pushed me to SS with the advice that it would be better to live closer to work and drive or uber to cool places.
