Just took a job in Atlanta. Looking for a good place to live. Young, white, single guy. Office is in NE Atlanta but I don't minda little bit of a commute in the morning = or <30 min optimally. Would like to pay less than 1k a month for an apartment.

Id also be interested in buying a house to live in, renovate and sell. Any neighborhoods I should look in to?

Virginia Highlands seems to get a lot of love here.

It was always nice back in the late 80s-early 90s

Can you be a little more specific than NE Atl?

Be a little more specific about where your office is

How old is young? Unless you work in a truly dead area, living near where you work will make a considerable difference in quality of life.

30 minute commutes are no big deal in Atlanta, but 30 minutes that goes over 2-3 major roads/interstates can become an hour with some frequency. Your life will be better if you can be 15-20 minutes from work on a good day and then only be 30-40 minutes out when Atlanta does its thing

What do you consider NE Atlanta? That general area still needs to be divided up to be able to provide the best intel.

For example, I work around the I-85/North Druid Hills area. That's a lot different than Chamblee/Doraville/Tucker, etc. Also, when people say Atlanta, a lot of times they really mean Duluth, Marietta, etc. So NE Atlanta could also really be Duluth/Norcross/Lilburn/Lawrencevill.

If you get a little more specific then I can help a little better.

I commute from Peachtree Corners to the NDH exit in usually about 35 minutes every morning (afternoon might be more like 40 minutes). For reference, that same drive late at night with no traffic is about 20 to 25 minutes. So traffic doesn't add TOO much more time.

Travel to Buckhead a lot for work. It seems like a really nice area...at least much nicer compared to all the other MARTA stops from there to the airport.

Seconded. Where will your office be located?

There are areas that are always popular (Virginia Highlands, Brookhaven, etc), but depending on your style, there are other areas that are great to live that might be a lot less of a hassle.

I always thought it was Sierra Skye that got the most.

You don't want to fight I-85 for long.

Either find a place south of your job so you are contra rush hours, or find a place where you can avoid an I-85 commute altogether.

Definitely not VaHi, Midtown, or Buckhead.

Alpharetta, Roswell and Sandy Springs would probably be your best bet. Woodstock or Kennesaw would be decent options too. I'm not sure how the traffic is from Decatur. 285 is usually a bitch regardless though.

Chamblee was probably the best bet for flipping a house, but that window has likely passed. Brookhaven is probably your best bet for an apartment, but you may struggle to find something for 1000 bucks. It's close enough with enough young people though.

Buckhead proper is another option but you're probably getting too old for some of the frat bars and probably don't want to live in Uptown Buckhead or some other place you could swing at 1000.

I probably wouldn't do VaHi or Decatur from where you'll be working.

In that case, you could live either inside the perimeter or outside.

Inside the perimeter, if you are looking for a young and vibrant scene, I'd look into Brookhaven. Virginia Highlands would be a little farther of a drive if your office is NE of Dunwoody.

Outside the perimeter, historic Roswell would be real close to work. But that would be a more chill, older area. Still some good nightlife though.

Also, Avalon is an up-and-coming younger area. It's a mixed-use development right off of 400. You'd just need to go a few exits down 400 to get to work.

I have no idea what rent will be in any of those places. Sorry.
