It's too bad they can't exist in the south.

Interstates and industrialization killed them. 50s and early 60s were the heyday. The South used to have incredible small towns

I'm not sure I agree with you on major cities being temples to conformity. I suspect there is more diversity of thought, ideology, religion, race, preferred hobbies etc. where I live than where you live.

Yeah I don’t get what he means. Small towns are temples of conformity. Everyone knows everyone and people generally conform to certain norms. Big cities are the opposite of that. Not sure how you can go to NYC and think, yeah, everyone is the same here. Big cities change fast, have tons of immigrants, and generally have a lot of weirdos too

Absolutely.

They used to be abundant though. Centralization and corporate mergers consolidated the activities you used to find in these old towns into the cities. Every town had their own mills, etc.. now they have Home Depot. Sure, its progress but it was a bit disheartening to watch them die.

I think the future will revitalize Main Street though with cottage industries and small specialty shops

Atlanta is so big that there is a great spot for everyone regardless of your age, religion, orientation, affluency.

It sucks that the OP didn't his spot.

But if you can't find a group of people just like you who are happy... you aren't looking.

Presently, I'm 60 miles north of Atlanta and we are in heaven. Mountains, rivers, and lakes. The kids are very active in swimming, cross country, wrestling, basketball, and softball. It might not be Louisiana, but it is an outdoorsman's dream with the economic opportunity tied to the city of Atlanta. You just have to look.

It’s simply too big now with way too much traffic. I liked Atlanta 10-15 years ago. As far as traffic, 400 and 285 give me anxiety.

Should have lived in College Park , Union City, or Morrow or anywhere near Old National Hwy.. You don’t know fun if you didn’t live in any of these posh locales.

The charm is in the suburbs. Norcross

What?Norcross?

Decatur/Emory,Midtown,Virginia Highlands,Inman Park,Vinings and West Midtown would have more charm but depends on what you like.

Roswell is a nice area and has pretty cool city square
area.

I have never had a problem in Atlanta even with mistakenly booking the wrong Marriott once and staying at the one right at the beginning of Peach Tree Street next to the entrance to The Underground in the most ghetto part of downtown.

Going straight to Sandy Sprinfs single basically means you were neighbors with parents and kids

Lived there in the early 90's and it wasn't a bad place at all if you were single.Apartments were crawling with folks just out of school.Buckhead was obviously the preferred area to hang out but places American Pie,Good
OL Days and Frankie's were pretty solid pit stops to meet women.(All are closed now BTW)

Not sure what this guy considers "decent bars" and you can easily get to Va Hi,Buckhead or West Midtown for less than $30 to $40 Uber unless your living close to the far northern boarder of SS.

The guys should've at least got some pointers from college buddies living here before moving.

If by Norcross you mean the whole school district and up and down Peachtree Industrial etc you are correct.

The environs of “downtown” Norcross are very charming.

The charming areas of Decatur Are great. Some of Decatur is terrible.

Some of Vinings is just suburban blah.

Some of West Midtown is ghetto.

I was referring to Decatur proper up to the Emory are....very few parts are "terrible"...area south certainly are rough but that's not Decatur even though
many folks think it is.

Sure and that's not where my comment was directed.

Not sure what exactly you mean but Vinings has some great restaurants and very nice home as well as being right on the Chattahoochee and close to the city...not exactly Woodstock or Grayson.

Which part? The Riverside area ain't great but not sure I'd really consider it west midtown.
