Country mice have always been skeered of the city. It is an age old story. Its also a common refrain from folks in the south that they live in some small city or town like Birmingham but find themselves in Atlanta on a consistent basis...for example the OP later goes on to explain his knowledge of Atlanta traffic, learned from many trips to NC from Birmingham. One could argue that most of the issues in Atlanta stem from Atlanta being the only major city in the South Eastern US and a regional hub for everything from St Louis to Miami.

I live ITP and am not seeing this constant dysfunction.

There have been a couple remarks suggesting that you should have taken I-285 to avoid the connector. I don't think that really helps much. Trying to merge from I-285 to I-85N at Spaghetti Junction is a shitty an experience as trying to merge onto the 75/85 connector from I-20. The only difference is there are no urban outdoorsmen standing on the side of the interstate at Exit 33 off I-285.
The best route to take from B'ham to any point in NC is to take I-59 up to Chattanooga and hit I-24 or any other route to connect with I-85 somewhere other than Atlanta. The only reason I can think of that any person on this board should ever attempt to enter Atlanta would be for the SEC Championship Game in December. Apart from that, there is really nothing in Atlanta worth the headache.

I prefer country mice to urban rats any and every time there's an option. (Yeah, I live in metro Atlanta. Ten years to retirement and I plan on becoming a country mouse shortly thereafter.)

Atlanta is a chocolate city. Why are you surprised
Posted on 7/24/23 at 7:43 am to dallastiger55
Not surprised in the least. That's a huge reason I don't live inside the perimeter.

Atlanta is a shithole for many reasons, but 911 not answering in the affluent area of town was what prompted this thread - the beggars on the interstate happened on the same trip, so I included it
I’ve gotta say, I’ve spent a lot of time on interstates all over this country but I’ve never seen panhandlers approach cars stopped in traffic ON the interstate. That’s pretty crazy.

no - the cities are comparable, but Bham does not have it spilling onto the interstate and 911 works here
...yet.
We're all on the precipice of most large southern cities being abandoned by all people with means to do so.
If they haven't got to Birmingham yet, don't worry. They comin'.

Also, we visit family in Atlanta every year and usually go downtown at least once to find things to do. Been to the Aquarium, CocaCola, College Football HOF, Hawks and Falcons games, etc. There is nothing in that town that feels remotely as unsafe as walking around downtown NOLA.
I guess it was about 20, 25 years ago we drove to see LSU play Ga Tech in the Peach Bowl and I idiotically got a hotel near Turner Field. It was pretty ratchet around there but I didn't feel I was in any danger. It reminded me of how New Orleans was literally at that time. Looking back, it's about how BR feels now.

What was surprising was the fact that at least a dozen homeless beggars were standing on the damned access ramp panhandling
This is surprising to you?

On the way home - just after we picked up the 75/85 connector from I 85 southbound; I saw a wrecked car on the Lindbergh Dr. HOV exit - the car was 1/3 on the shoulder and 2/3 on the road for the ramp - it looked like a car could maybe get around it, but it would be really tight
This is aggravating as hell.

Atlanta is really close to being the next L.A. or Seattle
The "huge" problems you've listed don't have any connection to atlanta. Just sounds like big city problems to me.

That’s what I’ve heard. Care to elaborate on this?
What sets ATL burbs apart from Dallas and Houston for example

Someone from Griffin, GA being critical of anyone else's city.
Hey now.... I have a love/hate relationship with both cities. My only bitch about Atlanta is that the traffic paired with the inept DOT cause so many problems. I can drive 10 hours through multiple cities like St. Louis, Memphis, BHam and get within an hour of my house and have the trip extend another 2 hrs just to get through the 20/285 split in Douglasville and then even worse hr wait to get through Eagles' landing mess on 75.
You aren't thinking correctly how 911 is handled. It's a County thing. Buckhead area is mostly Fulton County. So it doesn't matter if you're in a rich area and worth millions of dollars or a tent dweller, you get the same shitty service a huge inept county can provide.
Griffin is just another typical Southern city that is divided between people who want to choose the ghetto hood life and the rest of us who are just trying to make money and our patch of land better. We have our share of gangs and drivebys, but they're isolated because they'll catch a hot one if they try that shite in our small town.

Hasn't been true since 2020. It's obvious many of you haven't been to city of Atlanta in a while. Demographics have been shifting massively unlike New Orleans and Birmingham. Black population has been on decline now for 20 years.
