At what point did you become friends with your father?

Not sure how it was for most of yall, but growing up my dad was a bit of a hardass. Good dude, just strict which is what I needed honestly. We didn't start hanging out and talk to one another as equals (mostly) until I was 25 when my professional life started gaining steam.

Don't believe I ever did as I always saw my father as my father, not as a friend.

Probably when I was 20-21. I was surprised how much he'd learned about life since I was 13 or so

I heard a quote one time that was something like “A man is finally grown when he comes to the realization that his father doesn’t necessarily know what’s best for him.” Not really applicable here but I thought I’d say it anyway because I think it’s true.

Probably when I was 19.

There was a distinct moment - going to the bowling alley with him and having a few beers.

Same for me.

My dad was hell on me. We got to having more of a buddy relationship after I graduated from college.

This

The father/son dynamic got inverted after I graduated college and my dad went into a personal tailspin. I feel like I do the parenting now in our relationship.

I can tell you when I, well he, stopped

TDS is a hell of a drug.

Slowly making peace with the idea that my son won't know his paternal grandfather, but my 4 year old is old enough to notice he isn't around anymore. fricking sucks and is so stupid.

My old man has been in prison since I was 15 and will be in for the rest of his life. Wrote him a final letter when I got out of rehab last year.
