I’ve got three 26, 14,11

I’ve never noticed. You plan according to your ability. Was broke when the 26 was born. Do better now. It just works out.

From my experience, one can never afford the expense of children. Ever. So the best approach is not to make any decision of that kind based upon whether you can afford it. It's a personal commitment, not a financial commitment.

My wife and kids can’t make it work on $250k per year. There’s no limit to how much money women can spend. We were happier in our starter home making $90k

Spin-off from that OT poster saying he raises 4 kids on 140k.

I raise 3 on a lot less than that. They all go to private school. We make a ton of sacrifices. The OT would also scoff at my lifestyle

At least when you get divorced, you know exactly what you're going to send her. Just don't volunteer to pick up kid activity expenses. Your daughter will all of a sudden be in multiple competition dance teams.

Not sure income has anything to do with your question.

If you wait until you can afford kids, you will never have them

If you're a competent adult, having children isn't irresponsible, regardless of how much money you make.

So competent homeless people banging under a bridge should have a kid? It may not be the majority, but there are people out there that choose that lifestyle. These people 100% should not be procreating.

Last I check competent adults aren't homeless, but maybe I have high standards

Perhaps your definition of competent is different than mine.

I have 3 kids. Would have had a 4th but I realized a few things. I was tired of paying 6-7K a year in child care per kid. I was tired of bottles, diapers, etc. All my kids were born healthy and as age increases, so do chances of having birth defects/abnormalities.

My girls dance high school and junior high and recreational. My son plays soccer and travel baseball. My wife and I run the roads with them but it'll only last so long. Embrace the chaos, go with the flow, and help them experience life and other things that you weren't able to as a child.

You can live within your means and still have them enjoy a comfortable life.

Competent doesn't mean capable.

I started laughing when I read the subject. The answer, assuming you have no shame, is 0 dollars a year.

It all depends on what level of comfort you want. We intentionally only had 2 kids because we wanted to retire while providing all costs for college. We could easily have had 4 or 5 and gotten by with less for ourselves.

Ain't that the truth. I had more expendable income when we were first starting out.
