Our oldest is 12. We got him one for his bday last year . He doesn't have access to the net for now. It comes in handy when he has ball practice or away games. It hasn't been a problem yet other than him and his buddies texting constantly.

I was 16. I remember how awesome it was when they came out with phones that could play music and allow you to customize ring tones when I got to college.

I kinda miss the MIDI ringtones

I was 18 or 19 and used to forget it everywhere, that has changed! I remember calling my mom from a pay phone at the bottom of the Union at LSU on 9/11. Are those still there?

My 7 year old son has a very basic flip phone with no games on it. I like him having access to that phone since we don't have a land line.

There is absolutely nothing good that can come of a 13 year old having a cell phone with internet access and a camera

My kid and I hunt a lot. I like being able to text with him back and forth. Plus I have the Find my Friends app or whatever. So I know where he is in the woods at all times.

My 10 yr old son has my hand-me-down IPhone 5, he lost it last weekend but luckily we were able to find it.

I doubt it survives a year

10 isn't too young if they actually "need" it, and it sounds like your kid may. You can rig it up to for kids so most stuff isn't accessible. Hell my nephews (both under 5) both have their own Ipads, but all they can do on them is watch cartoons everything else is protected.

My siblings and I got a shared cell phone when I was 10. They were 14 and 13, for reference, and it was primarily for them (pay as you go Virgin Mobile type). I got my own cell phone when I was 15. They got their own cell phones at 16.

My wife blocked his safari and his ability to get new apps. He has to get permission before loading anything new.

About 8 years old. When we first starting leaving her alone at tennis practice or dance practice. That way she could reach us when we aren't there. She didn't/doesn't bring it everywhere. It's used for when we aren't there and she can reach us. She's 10 now and still doesn't bring it to school, to the store etc.
She has a laptop and an iPad so the phone is to her just a tool to contact us.
Parents that Say 15+ I'm guessing they have a land line. How does the child call 911 if there is a fire and your not home?
Like mentioned earlier as well, there isn't a single pay phone within an hour drive of where we live.
