My kid got his at 10 just so we can keep up with him, but unlike most kids his age (12 now) he's never on it and rarely carries it anywhere.
I guess that is good that he isnt attached to it. That is one big fear that will happen when it is given to him. Also, losing the phone. Kid could lose his hands if it were possible.

I was 16. It's when I started driving that I got one.

This was my first phone:
Got it in 2005, when I was a junior in high school.
I was one of the last of my friends to have a cell phone, and was definitely the last to have one that could actually take freaking pictures.
I missed out on a lot of noods opportunities in those days.

Got one when I started driving to school (17). I plan on doing the same with my children.
There is absolutely nothing good that can come of a 13 year old having a cell phone with internet access and a camera.

ah yes beepers....another piece of technology children these days will have no knowledge about.
Why would they need to?

I got one at 26. My kids got theirs at 13.

My 13 year old just got one. An older IPhone that I had previously used. She doesn't overuse it and isn't glued to it.

Not sure asking when posters got their first phone is going to help you. Cell phones weren't a practical option when many of us were 10. And they were numbers and a tiny screen, so the technology concerns weren't there.
I was 16. I remember how awesome it was when they came out with phones that could play music and allow you to customize ring tones when I got to college.

I got my first cell phone when I went to college in 2000 because it was cheaper than paying long distance to call home. No idea when my son will get his first phone, he's only 3 months old. . . so probably in a year or two

I had one in high school in the 90's. I would have to pull over and find a pay phone to call people who beeped me

Got mine when I got my license at 16. My parents just wanted to be able to keep in touch when I was driving around. I didn't know anyone who had their own before about 15 though. We'd all get to borrow one of your parent's phones when we all went to the movies or something like that.
