I was 8 when I started. Continental Airlines (TYFYS) had an unaccompanied minor program to help with this. Flight attendants always escorted me to my seat and airline employees always escorted me through the airport. As someone else mentioned, airports have game rooms specifically for unaccompanied minors to wait for connecting flights or for whoever is picking them up from the airport. I did this about 4 times a year from the time I was 8 until about 13 or so when my parents trusted me to navigate myself through the airport for connecting flights (always either ATL or IAH).

Most flight attendants seem like fairly sketchy people, don’t get much comfort there.

Unaccompanied minor programs are easy moneymakers for airlines. They take it very seriously.

Ours was 16 and had two others her age with her. They were going to a conference all exp paid and an unaccompanied minor ticket was bought. Someone was waiting for several kids at the arrival city.

Flew out of lft to dca so there had to be a connection.

And yet y'all bitch about the pussification of America.

Most kids are very capable. My younger sister and I were roaming Manhattan by ourselves on trips up there to visit relatives. We were 11 and 8. We could navigate the subway and go wherever we felt like as long as we were back by dinner. Late 90's

No wonder none of your kids will be independent self reliant adults

You escort them to the gate. The parent gets a gate pass that lets you through security. WTF. You think parents are dropping toddlers off at the terminal saying “good luck”?

Lulz. I saw the piece on him, he was groomed by a pedophile coach who abducted him. Nobody wants your awful kids except people that already know them.

I sent my kids to Florida to see their cousins on Spirit when they were 6 and 4 years old.

I flew from Fort Smith Arkansas to Lubbock Texas back in the 70s when I was like 7/8 my parents put me on the plane and my grandma picked me up.

That being said no way in hell, I’d let my son fly alone at that age today…

They don't fly alone. They are fully escorted and taken care of by the airline for the entire process if you pay the unaccompanied minor fee.

My daughter literally flew out this morning by herself for the first time and she turns 11 next week.

I did this myself in the late 90s as others have said, you really aren’t alone. My daughter will be 8 in January and I think next summer I would let her make the trip I used to from New Orleans to San Francisco to visit her other side of the family.

I worry less about her in the airport than her talking the ear off of the person next to her, but she’s gotten good with long car rides and some flights together, so I think she will be ready.

Which is funny because when a kid is kidnapped 9/10 times it’s a friend or family member

Honestly, it’s the one thing the airlines are good at is handling kids. 6 would probably be the age I’d be comfortable with.

I don't think it's something you should consider for under 12 or so unless it's absolutely the only option.
I would trust the airlines, but I also guess I don't see a scenario where I'd need to send my less than 12 year old anywhere via plane where I wouldn't take them?

Is this mostly used by divorced families?

Last time I was in Hawaii, the flight there had a 7 year old kid flying by himself. Good thing he was sitting next to my grandma - who basically fed him for the entire flight from her secret stash of candy and other goodies, and made sure he was comfortable and entertained.

I don't think I'd let my daughter fly by herself until she was 15 or so.
