Are you even catholic? This is a real thing Methodist and Catholic churches around south Louisiana even have Drive-thru ashes today. There's nothing wrong with getting ashes but not attending mass today as people have to back to work and such. You can get a blessing and your ashes and be on your way. Some of y'all are tards.

Raised Catholic but haven’t practiced in over two decades. My apologies for not realizing that the practice of the religion had reached fast food levels of convenience in its performative virtue signaling

No lie. That's literally what getting the ashes is.

Right, but at least you used to have to work for the right to wear that performative virtue signaling on your forehead all day. Catholic calisthenics ain't no joke

That's why I'm only going to the traditional 6pm service. I can get my ashes and drive straight home. I'm not going to shite on anyone trying to celebrate this religious event. At least they are trying to get right with the Lord. Nobody's perfect, we're all sinners. I'm not judging you if you have ashes on your head or not.

Ash Wednesday is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God and marks the beginning of the penitential Lenten season.

It's not just a Catholic day.

quote:

Recently, movements have developed that involve pastors distributing ashes to passersby in public places. This isn’t considered taboo, but Catholics should know this practice is distinctly Protestant. Catholics should still receive ashes within the context of Mass.

The drive by ashes is definitely not a Catholic thing. Considering Catholics won't let non-Catholics celebrate communion, do you really think they would just put ashes on anyone? You have to be in their club to get to heaven apparently. Methodists will invite anyone and everyone.

Doesn’t help you but one year we were in NYC for Mardi Gras week. A Catholic church by our hotel had ash distribution ALL DAY .. just walk in and get your ashes. They had volunteers who took shifts .. I hate to say it but it was so convenient. And it’s NOT a holy day of obligation so no one come at me.

I always thought that would be a neat option. No where here in the Lafayette area does that.

So you're really just virtue signalling, right?

What's the point in getting them if you aren't going to the service just to show off?

yes, I don’t ask anyone if they are Catholic before I put ashes on their head

If they walk up and not know what to do for Communion, then I’ll ask.

you don’t - but you do have to believe or be on the path to believing in transubstantiation to receive the Eucharist.

Ash Wednesday isn't a holy day of obligation. Mass isn't a requirement.

Nope.

Our church had 4 services today. 2 masses and 2 were ash only service. As tigress said, it is not a holy day of obligation.

Guess you flunked religion in Catholic schools.

Holy Days of obligation are:

Jan. Solemnity of Mary

May Solemnity of Ascension of Jesus

Aug. Solemnity of Assumption of Mary

Dec. Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

Dec. Solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord

Every Sunday is considered obligatory (or Saturday vigil Mass)

I’m aware. I was talking about regular weekly mass. It is a grave sin to miss it.

My stating "Mass isn't a requirement " was in response to Ash Wednesday.

Reading comprehension and following threads isn't your strong suit, is it?

I expanded my thoughts in another post that included Sundays as holy days of obligation.

I attended 13 years of Catholic school, dude. K-12.
