As U.S. 'superstar' cities thrive, weaker ones get left behind

Interesting article. Worth your time. Basic gist is, even though the country as a whole has seen huge job expansion since the 2008-9 crash, almost all of it has taken place in the top 40 fastest growing metro areas. And this is while, simultaneously, the metro areas in gray on the map below have been essentially dying.

Did you notice the cities listed ? Jobs are in the big cities but people are not living in those cities, they are choosing to live outside of them.

No one willingly chooses to live in Arlington.

That’s not fair. The succeeding cities need to send a significant portion of money to the struggling cities to make things equal.
Also that map has some questionable geography going on to make the numbers fit the story. Look at the Riverside-San Bernadino area in SoCal. That is a massive area of desert that’s been roped into a “metro area”. Riverside and San Bernadino are eastern exurbs of L.A., and Ontario is a little closer to L.A., but that area goes all the way to the border with Nevada and Arizona.
Done honestly, the 3 exurbs would be combined with the L.A. metro.
San Fran and San Jose are different metro areas? No.
If I wanted to shoehorn NOLA into the story, I’d arbitrarily define the NOLA metro area to include the Northshore up to the MS state line, Baton Rouge and everything between, and the MS gulf coast, and that area would still be smaller than the Riverside metro area they’ve declared.

There are more colored sections in Louisiana than in the entire North East combined

Why you gotta bring race into it?

The map is racist? What race is gold colored?

The joke isn't funny if I have to explain it.

Maybe fore some. Unpopular thought on here but not everyone wants to live in the heart of a major city.

I know the joke. I even chuckled to myself a little typing my previous comment out.
But serious question, why isn’t New York, Philadelphia, or any other major NE population center adding jobs?
