In your jurisdiction?

Crime continues to fail to historic, dramatic lows. Obviously, these stats don't include New Orleans, Chicago, Gary, and Baton Rouge.
Yet, in Louisiana, we have the Causeway Police, the Levee Police, the Bridge Police, etc. No telling how man worthless Sheriff's Offices'.
It's a wonder you can find an effin doughnut in this state.

This is what they call a hypothetical.

In some jurisdictions you could double the pay and half the force and have better law enforcement.

But they are protected, you can't just fire them.
It's why there is a hiring freeze or had been in many jurisdictions. But hiring freezes don't solve the problem because bad cops are still on the payroll.
A complete overhaul of the police force would be needed which would be very difficult except for a small town or suburb. It would have to start small and be effective. The problem is that small towns do pay more, and don't have the same demographics where it is truly needed (large metro areas).

What if they rolled it all up under the state police and got rid of all other forces... Walk with me here... The state po po has an office in each parish, and all activities for covering the shite that goes on in that parish is handled under that parish budget. All cops become state police...
Why is this a terrible idea? I'll hang up and listen.

Oh, you mean fantasy. Then yeah, sure. Realistically, no.

Most of those are actually under the dps umbrella, so really they fall underneath the state police because dps is under state police...

My retirement is after 25 years and I do not get 'full benefits'. I have an option to continue service through the city or drop it completely. The bill for health insurance is out of pocket on retirement.

I think raising police pay would bring in more desirable employees.
I'd do it, but I have a family to support.

That's my feeling, require a bachelor degree or military service with associates but with contingency to have bachelor's within 5 years.

Not a bad idea and the LSP is well-respected.
Would the LSP be willing to get rid of a lot these slack-jaws, though?
Really, at least 25%. Never miss 'em.

But then who would want to become a police officer?
Posted on 10/6/14 at 6:53 pm to burgeman
Yeah, I'd be ok with requiring a college degree and increasing salaries. Higher quality cops would be a breath of fresh air.
Oh yeah, they almost merged the Columbia, SC police with the county sheriff's department here a few years ago. It came close. It would have been a bad bad idea. The thought of the politically elected sheriff running law enforcement in this city just screams corruption.

No, I understand.
In every other world, when you don't need as many of someone, you lay them off.
I'm not building as many cars, I lay off assemblers.
Crime goes down, I don't need as many police.
It is ridiculous that no politician has the balls to carry this out.

Because if crime goes up on that politicians watch, they will get crucified. Crime isn't an economy, you can't control it like a factory.

It's not the balls, it's the money.
When Ohio tried this (removing unions) with Senate Bill 5 the money was too much to overcome in the votes. Police and Fire unions are too much, and they have sympathy from many people.
There would need to be an effective proposal of how to make the services supremely better and still take care of the officers.
