is anyone on here a pool man? Not installation or detailed repair, but checking chemicals, ph, etc.? I know there's not a ton of money in it, but seems like a nice little retirement gig if done on a small scale. I realize buying chemicals can get expensive.

If you are interested in chemistry, why not start a meth lab?

The real money is in building a book of business and selling it, rinse and repeat.

All I can add is:

1. a guy I know who is a fireman does it for his off day job.

2. When I had a pool, it was too easy to just take water sample to pool store and have them to test it and give print out of exactly how much of which chemical to add. As such, I would not pay anyone to do it.

I did this for the first year then realized I had a warehouse of chemical built up.. I do my own now and was amazed at how few chemicals are actually needed.

I found it’s cheaper to get on with a local guy that does a lot of the neighbors than buy all the chemicals myself, and it’s a less thing to have to worry about. He comes on Friday morning and it’s always clean and ready to go for the weekend

Maintaining the pool is not that complicated. You just need to stay on top of it and you will be fine. I use my own test strips and make a trip to the pool store with a water sample about every two months to make sure all is in line.

Here's a story about a guy in New Orleans that does just that:

Keeping the pool balanced is easy. You take a sample to the pool store and then add what's needed. If you want be a "pool man" you'll need to know how to work on the pump and switchboard, clean filters ect.... the kind of stuff not everyone can do or wants to mess with.

My pool guy comes over high as hell and cannot string together two sentences. Goes off on the following tangent:
“Why do I drive on a parkway, but park on a driveway?”

Pool water is fine tho.

I believe it might be pretty easy.

What do yall plan to do in retirement?

I have retired neighbors that are inside 23.5 hours a day. Doesn't seem that fun.

After June, I'll retire to be my wife's pool boy.

I took an advance yesterday.

Not be a pool man. That's not being retired, that's going back to work.

Maybe go on vacations. Maybe have a drink on the porch in the shade while I watch the retired guy work his 'side hustle'.
