Serious question- how often does a mortar round go off in the tube?

Well, the tubes we use today are supposedly good for 10,000 rounds. I don't know what the Afghan Army uses for tubes or rounds but it wouldn't surprise me if they were using the same system we use.

Now, for the round itself, they could've done like the Hawthorne incident and double loaded rounds in there and then trigger fired. The round could've been dented or one of the fins bent and it hit the side of the tube after the primer was struck and exploded then.

I'm a mortarman and it is something I think about every time I go do a range. At some point, and this is kind of a morbid thought, I just told myself "hell, if a round explodes in the tube, I won't feel any pain at all, I'll be blown to bits."

Thanks for the explanation.

So small, but very real chance that it all goes black after you drop the mortar in the tube.

Yep, hopefully they'll have been keeping accurate log books of how many rounds have been through that specific tube and then that'll Boil it down to what it probably was.

TigerfaninSouthland,
Was that the 120mm incident that happened back at NTC a decade or so ago? Round exploded as it came out of the tube and it was 113-chassis mounted

Maybe mentioned already and maybe in the link but do they show the video? Second photo has a video camera in the bottom of the frame.

It is extremely rare. It had to be a combination of a faulty tube and multiple high increment rounds being fired in succession. That is why you have to send them off BI-annually to be bore scoped (I was a Wpns PLT Cmdr, 81 mm PLT Cmdr, FST leader and honor grad at AMLOC)

Also as the Motarman (0331) said it could be that they had a fire mission going on and accident double loaded a round on top of a mis-fire. Can't imagine how you wouldn't here the mis-fire but if the pits are too close and they didn't hear the "dunk" over the other tubes it could happen.....

I don't know, I've only been in about 4 years. I would've been around 8 years old at that time so I wouldn't have been privy to the facts. We also don't consider the 120mm system as mortars anymore, they're considered artillery.

Thanks. I have always been interested in how mortars worked- I guess I failed to realize how dangerous they could be to the operators if they don't pay attention.

I bet that's what it was. Probably a huge fire for effect, like almost something crazy like a 7-10 round fire for effect and that barrel got bent or dented.

You can really tell some folks don't read the articles.

She was the only American killed in this event, the other four were Afghani.

I was curious as to how there were two photos from different angles, but one of the Afghans was a photojournalist she was training. So, her photo is the one that is straight on and you can see her camera lens/hand in the second photo.

I think it's good that the family wanted the picture released to the public. She liked photography, and unfortunately was killed while doing it. However, her last act was taking an incredible photograph. Maybe the family feels some pride in her work and wanted it to be out there as a reminder of her and her work. She did her job until the end.

Also, this from the link:
quote:

In the image, debris floats in front of an orange haze of flame and a soldier covers his ears from the blast.
is strange. I guess they think they were covering their ears because the explosion was coming/happening rather than that being part of their mortar procedure.

The 15-6 found the Afghan soldiers were negligent and caused this.

They don't have the mentality to form an army.

It's terrifying that the men pictured in the photo are in the same position they were in before the explosion. Literally dying before they even knew what happened.

East coast or West coast for Mortar Leaders Course? I was an instructor for 4 years (2008-2011), 81's FO for a couple years prior to that...all east coast.

I wonder how fast those rocks in the first picture are traveling, I'm guessing they're basically bullets after the explosion.
