Four years ago, Army specialist Hilda Clayton was killed while photographing a live-fire training mission in Afghanistan.
The pictures that the 22-year-old snapped in the seconds just before her death were released this week, published for the first time in the May-June edition of the Army’s Military Review journal.

Holy shite
That's scary how fast that must have happened.

That's for publishing this. Really uplifted my morning.

Serious question- how often does a mortar round go off in the tube?

thanks for sharing - its just sad.

What the hell was the army thinking here?
Posted on 5/4/17 at 9:34 am to Placebeaux
I'm curious. Are there images of the round being dropped in the tube?

This is fukd, you can see the impending shrapnel about to hit the soldier. R.I.P. God Bless our troops.

Stupid for the army and the parents for wanting these pics viewed. Sickening!

Maybe the parents wanted others to see the horrors of war instead of white washing it.

My Dad was in mortars. No telling how many he dropped down the tube. Just one like this, and I wouldn't be here.

I agree. They weren't released so people can go, "aw, man! Sick!"
It a good and simple reminder of the brutality of war, even in routine operations and even to personnel whose roles aren't as combat oriented.

Or maybe they wanted a sense of closure.
I don't remember this happened by or being briefed about it, I do remember a suicide bomber killing three men from my brigade around the same date as this. I think it was also Ramadan

I wouldn't call a training accident "the horrors of war".
I think it'd be just as dumb to publish photos of a jumper at Benning whose parachute didn't deploy.

I actually appreciate them releasing this. Good reminder that war is real and even noncombat roles run a serious risk.

I'd want it to be quick.
But why release the photos?
I hope the family finds peace, though. If this is their way, I get it I guess.

I feel like these photos share the sacrifice these men and women make for us. There is no problem in sharing them as long as the families involved give their consent.
