I guess they think they were covering their ears because the explosion was coming/happening rather than that being part of their mortar procedure.

Our mortar man can comment here, but according to my Dad, you drop the round, cover your ears, drop the round, cover, etc. etc.

East Coast...went through way before your time....1995 I think but will have to go back and double check....I had tied for the highest score until at least 2000 I think which is the last time I checked. Got out in 2002 and tried reserves but just couldn't play the part.

The proper way is slide the round down as you hand comes down under the tube...you don't ever let the hand go over the tube for obvious reasons. We taught Marines to touch their ankle or slap their thigh in the way down. Yes, they often cover their ears but it doesn't do you any good because overtime you will still loose your hearing. I never wore ear protection because I wanted to hire the initial fire commands and the echo response and watch that the tubes were all oriented the same direction. Invariably you will have a gun get the wrong data, usually the furthest pits out, and can catch it prior to commencing fire.

Those are Afghan soldiers. They were proabably using soviet mortors and shells from the 60's. That and the soldiers were probably poorly trained. I bet the tube was hot after firing multiple rounds and they didn't give it time to cool.

I remember when the closed Subic Bay and we got all the repackaged Vietnam era 60mm for training. Tons of mis-fires

Pic#2 looks like a movie? You'd think the blast/shockwave would have cleared the two guys out by then. It (the pic) seems to catch them before their hair is even messed up. I would not think that's possible.

Stupid for the army and the parents for wanting these pics viewed. Sickening!

I don't know. Seeing the photo spurred me to Google the young lady and learn a little about her life. Maybe that's what they wanted.

I feel like these photos share the sacrifice these men and women make for us. There is no problem in sharing them as long as the families involved give their consent.

I agree on this.

If anything the families can tell that it happened so damn quickly their loved ones never knew what happened.
That, in and of itself, would give me a sense of closure if I were one of the parents.

RIP Army

Being a mortarman is by far the best out of the grunt mos. I'm a 60's tubestroker. Semper Fi to you, brother.

I wear the ear pro if I'm on the gun, if I'm doing FDC, which is my primary job now that I've been in for a bit, I don't wear em because I'm usually back a good ways from the gun line. You really need to wear ear pro on the gun in my opinion and especially as the gunner because you're bracing the bipods with both hands. I remember I was a gunner one time and my ear pro fell out on a five round ffe, couldn't hear shite the rest of the day and had to get off the gun because I couldn't hear the commands.

With my 60's I stayed between the FDC and the gun line so I could listen to elevations and deflections while letting the section leader do his job without me bugging hm. With 81's I was constantly bouncing back and forth in my Hummer because I usually split sections. Still say 60's are the best bescause they really can be packed and liked the quick ability to hand fire them.

Haha yeah that was a little before my time.

You'd probably be surprised how little the course material changed from the time you went through till I got there. We did a major rewrite of the skills task list for the 0341 MOS while I was at the course and it finally allowed us to update some training.

I had a blast there.
