re: Are you thinking of leaving Louisiana for good?

Been gone since 2004. Miss seeing some friends and visit family for holidays and vacations but when we visit home (BTR) it confirms we made the right decision. I think one of us says this every time.
All that said, I have a son at LSU right now and he loves LA. Somehow in the blood I guess or maybe he hasn't gotten a belly full yet?

We put up with it because of family and friends, but I sure wish we could move.
The hurricanes suck, but the lack of seasons bothers me more. It's hot for over half of the year, and raining for about a third of the year.

Personally I can't handle snow for extended periods of time - and also my job isn't that just get up and movable. I need to stay in my regional market but otherwise have a lot of freedom to work from home, move locations, etc.
Looking to find the right spot on the eastern shore of Mobile Bay and then expand to start doing a lot of work along that entire panhandle stretch.

Non-marital birth is not a new statistic. It’s also not a harbinger of Louisiana’s death.
Assumption.
Based off of what?
SFP, I love ya, brother, but you’ve convinced yourself of something based off of preconceived notions. You’re assuming you’re going to fix births and relationship choices in a culture, and you’re not. The state can’t and never will allow such things.
There are many ways states can address these things, but you’re moving away from cultural norms in minority is all you’re doing.
There are ways to successfully navigate any system, no matter where you are. For all the awful crap this state gets, my kids have managed to still get an excellent education, my wife and I have an income that put us in the top 20% nationally, and I never wake you thinking this state is a shite hole. Yes, it has problems, just like every state, but it’s not half has bad as some on this board tend to pretend it is.

The problem with moving away for a lot of people, especially those that are close with their family and/or have young kids, is that you use all of your vacation time traveling back home to visit family instead of actually being able to travel.
This is always the #1 complaint from all my friends that have moved away that a lot of people never consider.

I do agree with this
although most of us live in our little middle to upper middle class enclaves and rarely see how the other 75% of the state lives
but that would probably happen wherever any of us live, so

I haven't done research on schools in cities with larger populations but I'd guess not many. Maybe some in the northwestern part of the country where there is less trash. Like you said though, you'd have to live in the suburbs. From what I can tell, Louisiana has some of the most inexpensive suburbs in the nation. Sure, I could move to Nashville or Asheville and make 10k-20k more but my taxes would be more, I'd pay at least $100,000 for the same house, gas and some food would be more expensive, and I'd be further out (prob 45 mins to an hour) from the city then I am now (10 minutes).
Admittedly not a southerner but I feel like a problem in the deep south (MS, LA in particular) is that the low cost of living is cancelled by the need to send kids to private school. You save on taxes and cost of living in general but then have to spend 10k a year each kid because the local public school is so bad. I'd imagine a lot of the people on here who live in BR or NO and send their kids to places like Episcopal or Newman are spending the same or not much less than someone who lives in NY or CA. Just an observation based on the few months I've been posting on here.

The entire state of colorado is awful?
This is what we’re doing here, we’re blasting entire states based on certain areas. We’re also extrapolating every issue and pretending it has pervaded every nook and cranny of existence inside a state’s borders.

True - for the most part. But for some reason, I have way less things I’m bitching at after moving 4 hours west and leaving Louisiana. And interestingly enough, all my friends and family that still live in Louisiana are still consistently complaining about things that are no longer an issue for me.
And all I did was cross an imaginary line. I guess it’s just a coincidence.

You don't have to send your kids to private school. You have to move to the suburbs or send them to a magnet school. 90% of the people that pay for private school live in the inner city.

If you are just getting started on your professional career, it is best for you to seek a home and a career elsewhere. The weather alone is sufficient cause to avoid La.

it's usually the best single indicator of the lower class mentality in any given area, and a projection of that population's chances of advancement

no. the fact that we're either #1 or #2 in the nation will mean that we disproportionately reflect the national numbers

look at our social pathologies
there are hardly any areas in this state with good public schools
look at our obesity rate, smoking rate, high school dropout rate, crime rate, rates of people on Medicaid/SNAP, etc.
we aren't ranked 49/50 in a country of 50 states without evidence

no i'm literally arguing that it's not possible

you've probably segregated yourself in one of the handful of nice areas...and paid a premium to do so (while, likely, made less than you would have elsewhere). i'm not arguing living well is impossible in LA, i'm saying it's expensive and rare
