I work in IT. You'll always be changing gears. I started working in the industry pre Active Directory. Now I'm building things in AWS and Azure.
Sure, but I want to avoid automation taking my job away forcing me to pivot. Gotta see changes coming and go with the flow.
I'm learning Python. It will be both useful now and something I can call back on if need be. I'm sure ill have to learn something again later but at least I'll have Python experience to work with

It’s really made me get more serious about trying to get prepared to retire ASAP. I like my job and don’t dread going to work everyday but this extra “freedom” and family time makes me want to have the freedom to enjoy it before I’m too old.

It’s called adulting. You should try it. It’s pretty good.
What a miserable outlook on life.
Started my own business last year after stressing over someone else's money for years. I hope I never get to the point of stressing my employees out over my own greed.
Life is too short to spend working yourself to death.

For me, it reaffirmed some beliefs. I have worked from home (and in a different state than my company's HQ) for the past 7 months. Outside of the COVID crap, I have very much enjoyed the flexibility it provides and have found myself more productive and am able to control my schedule in a greater way.
I long felt like the "arse in seats" model, dealing with commutes, sitting in traffic to spend half your day wasted by useless meetings and idle chatter, only to try to squeeze out time after work for personal errands, the gym, child care, was a complete sham and no way to live.
This experience I believe has awakened many to that sham. And I'm actually happy to see that from what I can tell, many companies will make remote work and work from home a permanent fixture going forward.
I know that personally I will never work for another company that doesn't offer a flexible work model. I'm on year 17 of my career and have no intention of going back to a standard arse in seat, 9-5 model ever again.

People that are sound technically will be able to make a living in our lifetime. Obviously this is my opinion and I'm a random guy and Tiger Droppings

Same here and my dad was like this when he was still working. He was defined by his job and I just don't understand that mentality.
Don’t know your age but I’m guessing your dad was one generation removed from the Great Depression. Coming off that difficult time period, people learned to value and protect jobs and the comfort and security they provide. Most of the current working class have never experienced that level of suffering.

A lot of us work 40-50 hour weeks and have a "live for the weekend" mentality. Friday afternoons are great but it's bitter sweet knowing we have to get stuff done at home and if we're lucky we'll really have 1 day to actually do stuff we want to do.
This is because you’re lazy. You eat up your evenings watching tv. I work about 40 hours per week, and I do fun stuff multiple days per week. I take a lunch break sometimes to play with my grandkids; I workout or run most days; my wife and I go out both weekend nights, and host Sunday dinner at our house. And on weekend days I do other stuff that’s fun. What I don’t do is park in front of a tv for hours.
Two things I have going for me is that I live close to my work, and I pay for someone to do yardwork.

If you're on Cox good luck. Old coax networks are a bitch.

Work blows. People that live for their jobs make no sense to me. I'd retire tomorrow if I was able to.
If you're lucky you get two days off a week and 3-4 hours in the evening. The rest revolves around working and sleeping. Once I'm vested at my current job, I'm considering getting back into tourism, the fun jobs.

Not cox but it's a coax network.

Yes but in different ways. I’ll be more likely to appreciate just having a typical boring office job. I’ve also considered now may be the time to start thinking about a transition to working for myself, although that would require working harder than ever before.

Im desperately trying to leave my 4-10 job knowing that whatever I grab next will likely be a typical 5 day 9-5, and now this thread is making me have some regrets. I'm in my mid 20s and don't feel like my current situation will set me up for future opportunities.

I’m wondering how I’m going to react to the first Karen that glares at me because I’m not wearing a mask.

I am also 35 and I have worked 4-10’s for the majority of my working career since getting out of college. I can attest that 4 day work weeks are a beautiful thing!

We have been lucky and have our jobs, but it’s made me re-examine our needs versus wants.
