It takes a special kind of social pariah and narcissist to walk in these places at closing time and order.

Settle down. So let’s say you’re coming home from a game/concert/whatever and your group is hungry. Pass a restaurant that everyone likes and pull in. Oh wait, they close at 9pm and it’s 8:30pm.

Sorry everyone, looks like it’s BurgerKing. Despite the owner would love 4 hungry/thirsty patrons. Despite you wanting to eat there and a great way to end the night. Gotta make sure that dishwasher gets home on time for Xbox
Cmon. That’s ridiculous

Everything you’re saying is technically allowable, but extremely tacky in practice. I’m betting you’re probably just an a-hole in general.

frick that. If you're open, you're open. I've worked plenty jobs where staying after "closing" was a possibility and occasionally happened. It's a risk of working in a filed that serves people.

If the industry wants to put a stop to it, there should be a last seating time.

I’d never do that to people trying to end their shift and go home

If everyone thought like you, no one would visit restaurants the last 30-60 minutes. With zero customers, they would close earlier. And cycle would repeat until out of business.

I guess you wouldn’t have to worry about the server working late anymore.

Go ask restaurant owners if they would like customers at all times of the day - every single one would say yes. You know, the people who give jobs to all these servers

You do understand the place is probably LOSING money on your dumbass based on the paying their employees to stay electricity, etc while you and your family eat their pubic hair burger. An hour before is acceptable, 30 is a stretch. Anything under that makes you a total dickhead.

If I’m by myself, I can eat in like 10 minutes. But I still wouldn’t go in there right at closing. Say if it closes at 10, I probably wouldn’t go in past like 930 or 935.

It depends. Some places like Crechales here in town have a stay open til last customer leaves policy.

The couple of times I've done it, I've done everything to make it easier on waitress. Order almost immediately, go ahead and clear check instead of waiting for it, etc. and tipping well, of course, after apologizing.

Restaurants should list the closing time of the kitchen with hours. I get not going in right before and sitting down to be served and so on especially with multiple people and alcohol involved, but if driving by a place and decide to order something togo knowing kitchen hours would be helpful.

Sometimes unwritten rules are the specific location’s rules that aren’t necessarily corporate sanctioned.

I remember when I was ten years old, I was with my dad and his best friend at Taco Bell drive thru right before they closed on a Saturday night and they ordered 20 soft tacos.

Isn’t there some kind of unwritten rule for this? If not, there should be…

Worked at a few restaurants in college. Admit it can be annoying, but no doubt if they change the closing time of the kitchen to 9:30, the kitchen staff would start getting pissed if you came in at 9:25. Then they move it to 9, and they get pissed if you came in at 8:55. Everyone is always trying to close their area efficiently to knock off as soon as possible so they try to get head starts and will always be pissed when someone starts messing with their head start.

Only once and it was a Taco Bell/Burger King. We were trying to find a place to get something quick after a concert and they were the only place still open. We walked in and you could see they were staring to clean up so we said sorry, did not know you were cleaning already and turned around and started to leave. The guy who looked like the manager said it was ok what did we want, so we asked what was the easiest thing to make. We left with tacos and fries they had left

30 minutes before closing is just barely over the line. Depends on the type restaurant.

However, your idea that owners want people there eating after closing hours is dead wrong. They don't need 5 annoyed employees clocking out 45 minutes later just to make an extra $50 after costs.

Where a small percentage of people seem to miss the point entirely is that when the clothing store is open until 8pm, you don't come in at 7:50 to start trying on suits. You get there in time to be done by 8pm.

When a restaurant closes at 10pm, get there at very least in time to be done by 10pm.
