I've filled these out several times before but don't remember them asking what kind of cracker I am (Irish, French etc) in the past.

I thought it was a required field online. I don't even know much about my wife's heritage. She's from Alabama so I just put gump and half gump for our daughter

The Census way predates the IRS, baw, and provides demographic and social data for everything related to government. Including electoral votes and congressional seats. It’s one of the very few specific tasks assigned to the government in the Constitution.
Besides, the Census counts all persons, not just those who pay taxes or have a SSN.

Yes they will. Maybe you weren't home and they gathered the info from your neighbor, which is allowed. Maybe the census worker was lazy and just made up the data.
I worked the census in 2010. A form was completed for every household. Whether or not it was accurate is a different subject.

I did the online version and it went quickly. It was easy and quite efficient.

surprisingly so. it actually took longer for me to add my note to it than it did to fill it out.
not sure why, but it bothers me that it died not ask me if i am a citizen, or not. guess more money will flow to the areas that have accepted illegals.....
