Historically a mouse herding dog, Yorkies have recently been bred to be timid and bark at their own shadow.

We had a female. Every bit of 5lbs. That dogs swore it was as big as a Great Dane, with the authority of a Doberman. My 2 100lb Labs would not go in the bedroom if SHE was laying in front of the bedroom door. That little dog was fearless. My neighbors big lab and one of mine had a "territorial dispute" one day. Me and the neighbor were pulling them apart, I look down and the Yorkie was latched on to the neighbor's dog's ankle.

I have a Yorkie all 5 lbs of him. Got him from breeders of champions blood line. He is the smartest dog I've ever owned. I use the bell on a string hanging on the door and he rings it to go out. Very simple. He doesn't bark and is a ton of fun. Everyone loves him

That confirms the dog wasn't raised with any discipline or to know and respect the pecking order in the household.

Bingo. My girlfriend has one and he’s a spiteful little bastard. When he acts up though he gets his way, so he continues to act up. Closed the door to my bedroom the other night and he started clawing at it. After a few minutes of this I got up to go jerk a knot in him, only to see he’d shite on the rug and pissed in two different places. He barks like a maniac anytime someone gives the impression they’re about to leave the house, and barks like a maniac if he isn’t getting the attention he thinks he deserves. This is all a consequence of the dog being spoiled his entire life. At the end of the day he’s a really sweet dog but they are a petulant, stubborn breed. My aussies know when my voice raises it’s time to cut out whatever shite it is they’re doing or face swift negative repercussions. This dog thinks the world revolves around him.

I have 2, and they’re both very well trained and smart. Your wife’s sounds defective.

We have a small cockapoo. He took 2 weeks to house break. Never used the bathroom in the house since. Great dog. No shedding. Only downside is he barks at every animal he sees on the TV.

I have a three year Yorkie that I am convinced is part human. She is incredibly intelligent. She hasn't crapped in the house or destroyed anything since the first couple of weeks. It's her emotional intelligence though, that astounds me. Smarter in that regard than any dog I have ever had. She is easily the favorite dog of my lifetime.

My mom had a Yorkie just like this. I think her previous owner had died and my mom adopted the dog. You could talk to her like a human and see genuine reaction and understanding. When my sister's kids were born and my mother babysat them her Yorkie was incredibly loving to the children and watched guard over all of them when they slept in the spare bedroom in their infancies. One time my mom forgot to let her out for the bathroom for a really long time and she peed inside, and the amount of remorse and sadness she showed over not holding it in broke my mom's heart. I think that was the only time she had ever used the bathroom inside.

My dad didn't want to adopt the dog but after a couple week's that dog became daddy's little girl. She always waited by the door for my dad to come home from work so he could walk her. One day she started acting funny and tried to get my dad's attention, though, acting funny he took her to the vet, and she just died at the vet of a heart problem, no more forewarning than that. Heartbreaking. She was such a sweet girl.

Well done.

Also, “A Fish Called Wanda” was a good primer on the handling of Yorkies….
