My first wife complained about this incessantly until I finally decided I'd give her the "respect" she was asking for and started putting the seat down. We seriously had nothing else to fight about and within six months she went crazy. She fought with me constantly over shite that made absolutely no sense. Suddenly she was accusing me of everything from cheating on her to mentally, emotionally, and verbally abusing her.
After we split I looked back on my decision to put the seat back down as the turning point in her irrational behavior and I decided I'd never do that again just so there would always be at least something for the woman in my life to bitch about.

His and her toilets are the solution. Mine is the one in the master bath. That thing could flush a cinder block worth of poop. It stays like I leave it. If I pee it is up if I poop it is down. There's one upstairs and another in a half bath I rarely use. Those can stay down permanently and the girls use them. I don't complain about having to lift and lower those and the girls don't complain about having to put it down on mine. Everyone wins if they know what to expect.

It seems more sanitary to keep the seat up. Less chance of someone passing on it.

Just get one of those public-type toilet lids with the segment cut out of the seat. Then the seat can stay down always.

once, I left the toilet seat up and went to bed...\
in the middle of the night, my girlfriend gets up to piss and shortly, I hear all kinds of scuffling around and splashing in there!
I managed to contain myself until she gets back in the bed and I heard her mumble under her breath something like "you mother fricker"...at that point, I lost it!
since then, I have been a little more civilized and put both the seat and the cover down after I use the thing....
in the middle of the night, my girlfriend gets up to piss and shortly, I hear all kinds of scuffling around and splashing in there!

The best way to go is to just leave the seat AND lid down at all times. That way when they piss or shite all over themselves you can say you did it for sanitary reasons so that the shite you flush doesn't aerosolize into the air.
