Are wine/beer/beverage pairings the stupidest concept known to man?

This is something I don't understand, restaurants and people who make a big deal over "beverage pairings".
I don't get it at all, like a certain kind of wine or beer served will really make this dish taste better, and vice versa.
Wine is wine. Beer is beer. News flash, the dish or entrée or meal or dessert will taste just as good if you are drinking water with it. A "wine pairing" will not make the meal.
I think its a marketing gimmick for restaurants to justify higher prices and move inventory on their wine and food menus. Foolishly believing that it will make the experience of the meal better is ridiculous, its just a placebo effect. You brain thinks the experience is better because you were told it would be better.

Ever been to an extremely nice restaurant with an actual Sommelier and had a pairing? It is real, trust me.
The August pairing with the degustation menu is pretty damn great. I had pairings in Paris at Spring Restaurant that blew my mind.

No. I wouldn't spend money at a restaurant like that who is pushing gimmicks on the customers in order to justify higher prices.

Think of the drink like you would a side dish, you want a taste that compliments the entrée.
