Id say social media has distorted your view of people being unhappy

Ahhhh, lets get high and get to the bottom of this conundrum

So life really isn't bad, people are going through hell because they think it's bad?

Nah...

Well, I mean this is an easy one, dunno why you'd want to see from '53 till now, this is good enough:

Life has gotten easier, yet suicides are increasing.

I'm sure you're just a contrarian though, antidepressant use, fatherless homes, bankruptcies, are also at an all-time high. I'm sure you'd consider that happy times? Why? Because everyone has a Facebook account, flat screen TV, and an smart phone?

Correct. Social media typically shows the maybe top 5% of individuals' life. What you see is other people on vacation overseas, being in a perfect relationship, seemingly never in any financial trouble, etc.

You don't see the reality of peoples' lives. Instead, you see this Utopian viewpoint that is impossible to live up to. But this doesn't keep folks from thinking their relationships are fricked up because they have trouble but other people seemingly don't. Or that you live a shitty boring life because everybody else is out on vacation.

Folks get that thrown in their face while never seeing the other 95% of peoples' lives that are just like theirs. Marital issues, financial difficulties, etc.

That creates a false perception of inadequacy and what people should expect out of their lives. It's an expectation that is almost impossible to live up to.

Even if that is true, quality of life has risen dramatically as well as opportunities for minorities, women, and the lower class.

It just shows peoples happiness remains relatively unchanged when looking at it from a macro level throughout the years.....

So the suicide rate jumped 25% because of social media?

Bro, that's a symptom, not a cause.

There's an uptick in depression, there's an uptick in smart phone use but there's nothing solid to showcase coorelation between the news and depression and suicide

That is simply not true. You brought up suicide rates in the 1950s-1970s. I suppose to offer a counter argument? Than you go on to say happiness remains unchanged? I don't understand. Now if you wanted to make an argument, I would counter former war veterans would be a good place to start in terms of whom committed suicide. The time frames where there were spikes could definitely point to war exposure.

I would say that is a large part of the issue, coupled with veterans returning from war.

A culling of the fold is necessary.

For too long we have Robbed Darwin of his bountiful harvest.

The poor are fat. The stupid are rich. The lazy are famous.

This world is out of order. Degeneracy reigns and the indolent spread like cancer.

What we need is a new plague. A scythe to cut through the rotting wheat that corrupts the fields of humanity.
