I have an antique gold pocket watch that had been working but stopped. From the late 1800s it belonged to my great grandmother.

I’d like to get it working again

I mean it’s not something I use daily but would be cool to have something so old still work

I don't know you, but wherever you are at right now - within 15 feet of you are at least a dozen devices with absolutely perfect "clocks" that keep perfect time as long as they are set correctly. I would also suspect 2 or 3 of them get their time from a network time that you never have to set.

That said, big cities often have second hand watch places (typically at higher end pawn shops or dedicated used watch places) with competent repairmen.

there are a few, but you normally have to send the watch to them...

No shite. I look at my phone to see time.

Is it not normal to want an antique piece in working condition if possible?

Shoot, if I had something like that, I'd be using that bad boy. Digital clocks are overrated.

What brand is it? Can you see the back of the movement?

Parts for Waltham, Ball, Hamilton, Illinois and other US makers are plentiful...if it's an old Swiss movement, no so much.

High end jeweller's will probably have someone on staff. There's still a few walk-in places for watch repair.

If you know the company that made it, can see if still around, they may have a program for antique repair.

I know a place in Nashville, but its pretty expensive. Tried to get a family heirloom repaired (pocket watch like yours) and he basically said it would be $450 to fix it all. Needed a few different components to work again.

Its still in my dresser not ticking

90 year old guy has a watch repair shop across from my office.

Repaired two old Hamilton pocket watches for me.

Send it to Mark. He'll fix it and not charge an arm and leg.

I second Sollberger's in Ridgeland. The owner is Swiss, and he studied watch repair for years before he immigrated. He's also a helluva nice guy. You won't find a better expert in the southeast.

Laynes in Gonzales put me in touch with a guy in the area who repaired an antique pocketwatch I was given. GPA bought it as his first purchase after getting back from Korea so it was sentimental to me. Call them and ask. If Alex is there tell him the guy with the blue Colorado from LLA sent you, he’ll know who you’re talking about.
