I cross in Lukeville AZ (Sonoyta) all the time on my way to Rocky Point. Never a problem.

airports are pretty safe.

If your sister does a lot of traveling down there and has had successful, safe experiences why wouldn't you just do the same thing that she does? Why do you want to walk across at a border town?

I know people who walk to Juarez from El Paso 3+ times a week with no problems. They usually have someone pick them up so they do not have to drive their vehicles (nice vehicles make you a target). Obviously Juarez is a little more dangerous than some cities, but if you don't go looking for trouble (go to barrios, try to buy drugs, act like an idiot in general) you should be fine.

Honestly you see American license plates all the time within 50 -100 miles of the border in Mexico and on the main highways to Monterrey, Mexico City, etc... deep into Mexico. Despite our news media BS there are thousands and thousands of Mexican Americans in the U.S. that live & work here and still have family in Mexico. They get vehicle permits and drive in just like everyone else. American cars and license plates are very common there.

It isn't the license plate that is the problem. It is the jacked up new F250 (or similar) that gets attention you don't want. With that said there are lots of outfitters based in the U.S. that drive their trucks in/out of Mexico weekly during hunting season. My hunting truck is a 97 F250 gas guzzler with a 454 engine, stiff suspension, and 20 year old seats. Sometimes I want to get down there and back on a quick comfortable trip and I take my newer F250 powerstroke. No problems. Before that I occasionally took down my GMC 2500 diesel with no issues. License plates aren't a problem. It is what you are driving, WHEN you are driving, and how you act in town. Except for the main highways most highways go right through towns at 20mph with big speed bumps, lights, people on bikes, people walking, etc.. You are going to creep through town from one end to the other. Go through a town with stereo blaring music and you bring that unwanted attention to yourself. Go through town pulling a $18K UTV on a nice dual axle trailer and you have unwanted attention. You raise your profile and then the risk. License plates from the U.S. - Not a problem at all.

You are right about Juarez. Anyone can walk over, have a meal and some margaritas at the Kentucky place, visit a farmacia, and walk back just fine.

I probably wouldn't go to Tequila Derby or any nightclubs and get wasted, or take a taxi to the barrio for cocaine, you might run across trouble doing that.

Juarez did set a new murder record last year though, so I would exercise good sober judgement if crossing the bridge.
