You have me curious now. My SO isn’t fond of the idea, but I’m entertaining it. We are road tripping out to San Diego this summer, hoping the Natl Parks are back up and running at full capacity.
I didn’t think Juarez would be a safe place to do it. You do any work there or is it all recreational? How far in to town do you go?

Have a friend in del rio and they all cross to Acuna regularly. He's lived ther since 1998.

We live in San Diego and its a 4 to 5 hour drive to san felipe. Great spot on the sea of Cortez. There is a mexican military checkpoint about a 1 and half south of the border. No problems there either.

I’m stuck in EP for work a lot so I walk over to Juarez for dinner/drinks/sightseeing. It’s certainly not a destination but there’s some cool stuff to see if you happen to be in the area.
What you should really do it you’re in that area is drive down to the city of Chihuahua and from there take the Copper Canyon train out to Sinaloa. Copper Canyon is 4x as big as the Grand Canyon and the train stops at a bunch of beautiful villages along the way. And Sinaloa is breathtaking. Then make your way back up to San Diego. Maybe do some Valle de Guadalupe wine country in between.
The best part is all your friends will think you’re insane despite the fact that you just took an extremely afforable, amazing (and safe) trip to a land and culture right under their nose.
But yeah look it up. And have fun

I used to hit TJ back in the early to mid 90s.I hung out mostly on Revolucion Avenue. I was in my early 20s and it was fun. I couldn't find the donkey show.

I will look it up. I thought my sister was nuts, but turns out she has done trips deep down Mexico several times, and they take their 4 kids with them.
Since it’s a road trip, our options are wide open at this point. I’ll have to convince the SO though. Lol

On the one hand it drives me crazy how people talk about Mexico. On the other I realize the irrational fear is why my wife and friends and I get to keep doing all this cool stuff for so cheap

I actually can help with this. I moved my mom to Merida, MX earlier this year and have actually driven from the border to Cancun many times. I've always driven through Nuevo Laredo. When you pass you go directly to get your car insurance and will be able to avoid driving through the heart of the city. There's a shite load of semis going through there so be careful. Really, once you have left the city it's smooth sailing to Saint Potosi. The highway is a turnpike so be prepared to spend a lot on driving,

Probably because you're understating Mexico's crime problem to make your point, kind of how plenty of Americans overstate the crime in making their point. There is no conspiracy here. Violent crime in Mexico is a real issue. That doesn't mean that we don't have our fair share of problems. People should always be mindful of their surroundings when visiting places like New Orleans, Detroit, Chicago, etc., so I would agree that we shouldn't puff out our chests too far in arrogance. However, places like Acapulco, Tijuana, and Juarez have charted murder rates MULTIPLE times higher than these U.S. cities in recent years. I don't consider New Orleans to be a particularly safe place, do you?
I've visited Mexico many times, and I'll continue to do so. I won't put my head in the sand and pretend like I shouldn't be careful when I'm in higher crime areas though. That said, I think Mexico is an incredibly beautiful country. Most tourists think they've seen Mexico because they went on spring break or a cruise to Cancun and/or Cozumel. There is so much more (and better) in Mexico than those places. Besides the coastal cities and towns, there is Guadalajara, Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende, etc. And Mexico City is an AMAZING place that definitely gets a bad rap. It's safer than MANY U.S. cities, yet people think it's a war zone.
Bottom line, be smart and you will most likely be fine. Are Americans (and people on this board) overstating their chances of being brutally murdered in Mexico? Yep. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't exercise caution when visiting many of the places mentioned in this thread. Oh, and as far as answering the OP... I've only driven across once, at Eagle Pass/Piedras Negras. I had no problems and all seemed pretty safe. However, this was years ago for work, so that information isn't worth much now.
