I’m not sure if they are official rest stops, but New Jersey seems to have a lot of gas stations where you don’t even have to get off the interstate. it’s sort of looks like a rest stop, just with a gas station in it.

yep and that's what every rest stop should be like.

Stopping at a rest stop is wasted time to me. I can't get gas and I can't get food. I'm not spending 5-10 minutes to stop just to pee and stretch my legs, then get back on the road and have to pass up all the asshats i just passed up over the last hour again.

I'm shocked you dont need a full time caretaker to keep you from walking in traffic.

I dont think drivers would get many points from hitting slow, fat bitches though.

While I wouldn't be opposed to the idea, I'm not full-bore ANCAP to that level.

Rest stops can easily be run by private entities.

The only issue here is some people hate private industry. its that simple.

Yeah i get that. And i'm not saying rest stops shouldn't exist, but i'm not going to utlize them b/c it's a pointless stop to me. I'm anal about getting to my destination as fast and efficient as possible.

We should have huge rest stops that are in the median of the interstate, so both sides can utilize it. They have some gas stations like that heading down to Orlando. Make them huge with space away from the gas/food if you don't want to be around that crowd. But being able to pull over stright into the gas station and be able to get some quick food and get right back on the interstate would be the type of rest stop i would stop at.

I find the rest areas can come in handy when you are in need of relief.

Rest stops generally always have a family bathroom.

When my daughters were younger that made the logistics of bathroom breaks much easier.

I usually don't know what to do when I get to a state, so I like to grab as many brochures as possible to figure out all the sight seeing adventures I can take.

How else am I suppose to figure out Klibert's Gator Farm?

Yeah then Jeff Landry’s wife’s cousin can get the contract, cut back on the maintenance, and not make any repairs

One problem with only private ones is that at first they're clean and well run. Then -- especially in long, less populated stretches which was the reason there was a rest stop in the first place -- you have many where restrooms are always out of order after you've gotten off the interstate and spent 10 minutes getting to the station.

That leads to 1000s of people contacting their representative about the huge inconvenience.

Then government may make deals with private companies where they get prime spots only if they also open in less frequented ones and set some minimum restroom requirements. But, government then has to stay on top of that actually happening. It's not like government just washes its hands of the responsibility like some fairy tale.

All these issues are from news with the privatization of many rest stops in the northeast.

Seems one decent solution so far was that government still maintains the rest area space with public restrooms but rents retail gas/food space on the premises.

I feel like Bucees has spoiled folks on what restroom spots at exit restaurants/fast food joints/gas stations are actually like. That's absolutely not the norm at those businesses.

Just make restroom maintenance a condition of the lease renewal for visitors services.

I was on a road trip last month in rural Oklahoma. Went 2.5 hours on smaller roads with no bathroom/gas station/etc in sight. I almost pissed myself and couldn't believe how long you can drive with out a place to piss.

So far in this thread I've figured out many "conservatives" think government does a better job running a business than private individuals.

That's exactly what happened with many. However, it's still a source of constant complaint that gets local political attention because it bothers wealthier people and many that are "swing voters".

You hear a lot of arguments that it's just more effective to have public restrooms without having to run a "bathroom surveillance" operation.

Local governments may do a lot of things inefficiently but, as someone who travels a lot, they do seem to be a little better at maintaining decent restrooms along the freeways than 1/2 the private gas stations.

I'm a lot more result oriented than one who just clings to some political theory whether it works or not in a specific application.
