If you read the OP you would see he is looking to spend less than 20k
You can get an early 996 for low 20s/high teens with less than 125k miles. He did say he wants to tinker.

The IMS isn't really an issue with the 97-00 cars with the double walled bearings. More an issue with the 00-04 single bearings.
If I got a low milage car I would swap the bearing with the clutch right away. If I get a high mileage car chances are it's fine.
Apparently the bearing issue is more pronounced on cars that weren't driven hard or often.

I had a family member with a 2000 Boxster S with the bigger wheels, tires, extra gear, extra 50hp (250 total). Was a total thrill to drive. I helped put pipes on it and it sounded great. Nice thing about the Boxter mid engine is you can hear all the throttle butterflies snap shut when you let off (its right behind your head).
The SL is a totally different animal. They're very sedate and solid, built on E-class platform. Had one, loved it, would buy again. Skip the v12, it's a garage queen.

Yeah the 996 is also almost affordable. I found a nice cabrio 4 for $29k and thought hard about it.

I would LOVE an air cooled 911 but the market is insane on them right now.

I don't go to mechanics. Period. If I blow an engine or need to rebuild a transmission I teach myself how to do it. By tinker I mean I would do all the work myself.
You got a lift and a hydraulic table?

That market has been crazy for a long time and it's not going to change.

I'm looking for a 3rd vehicle. Not a daily driver.
Something sporty to take out on weekends.

... and this is an option. I was bidding on a high mile one on Bring a Trailer.
I always liked the 911 look.
When I used to play need for speed I always drove the 911 or the Espirit.
The Espirit was my go to car that I planned to get at 40. Then the covid market happened.

Unless you have a lift in your garage I wouldn’t get the Porsche if you want to “tinker”. I would look towards an M2 for that.
The newer Boxsters are fun to drive. Want to see new RS is a beast but there is a wait list and will set you back $170K. If you want something that is glued to the track look towards the 911 RS. A buddy has one I and ran it around on a track once and parked it because I scared the life out of me (it stuck so well I was afraid I would push it and trash a $300K car)

996 Cabrio’s with ~50k miles on carsandbids.com seem be topping out around $28,000. I’d keep checking in on there for both Boxters and 996’s.

Yes. I have a lift. No to hydraulic table but I like adding to my tool collection. I have a storage unit full of random speciality tools.

Nice. Yea you should be able to handle whatever a boxster throws at you. I would still definitely get one with the ims already taken care of.

I think they are "Girly". 911 is the Porsche I would get.

To each his own, but I cannot fathom spending that on a Boxster /Cayman when there are other cars in that range.

if you're seeking a message boards approval about which car to buy then it doesn't matter what the car image is, Yes you're gay

Quality and performance wise a 718 RS is gonna be pretty hard to beat.
And you don't even have to think about the money. Those things are gonna hold their value well and probably won't be long before they start appreciating year over year.
Regardless, if you have the scratch and the connections to get a 718 RS you probably aren't posting on a louisiana centric message board at 8:30 AM on a weekday.

I'm not really seeking approval. Lol
Just wanted to see the boards opinion.
I kind of knew but I just want a fun midlife crisis convertible while I still have hair on my head .
