For myself it was due to:
1. Not having shite in my house
2. Thinking that businesses (even grocery stores) could potentially close for a period of time.

We are a family that cooks most meals at home and always has a stocked pantry and freezers full of meat, vegetables and wild game, so didn't really need anything.
If we were people that ate out most nights, I would have stocked up. It's not irrational to prepare under these conditions with so many unknowns. Supply chain interruptions are within the realm of possibility, even if short-term.

I noticed one thing. Stores that trashy people are known to frequent are out of everything. Mom and pop supermarkets and nicer places are stocked.
I went to Zuppardos today for snacks and they had tons of paper products and water. No BS and no lines.
Meanwhile the other night at Walmart I saw a guy get busted trying to steal water.

shite fricking irks me. I sent my son to the store today to grab stuff for dinner and they were out of frozen shrimp. WTF do people think is going to happen?
While I refuse to get on Facebook because it's the scourge of humanity, my wife reports that our local sports store sold tens of thousands in guns and ammo yesterday, fights over water, people frickING PLAYING VIOLINS OUTSIDE WALMART like in "Titanic". The world has gone fricking mad!!!
If you have even the slightest motivation to research what's going on, you would learn in 30 minutes that, yes, shite is not going to be good but supply chains will continue. Food will be available. The water dept isn't going to shut down due to infected water. Corona doesn't give you the shits. There will not be a run on gas. You will not have to defend your homestead from the poors trying to raid your stash.

The grocery store is an interesting risk area thought exercise.

I have no idea but I went by the grocery store for a couple things (wife is pregnant) and it is absolute fricking chaos.
I went from zero concern about this to being kind of concerned. The public reaction is just so ridiculous. Wife asked me to pick up some crawtators. Chick in front of me said, "oh we probably need chips," and got fricking 10 cans of pringles. It is insane.
Meat? Forget about it. Planned on doing a couple racks of ribs with the neighbors. Kroger had basically nothing left. Couple of those "pre-marinated" filets and pork loins and that was it.
